INTRODUCTION
In the modern generation, the use of technology has brought both positive and negative effects. One of the major results of technology would be the aspect of pornography that has been linked to women interests being harmed. Pornography can be described as materials or shows depicting strong sex in the context of either degradation or domination (Boyle ,2010). According to Hall (2007), pornography also has its benefits into women as it empowers men by making them feel equal to men. Women are considered as a necessity in any man’s sexual life and therefore by taking away pornography, it may be considered as denying them their rights. However, pornography may only be considered beneficial if conducted in a controllable and legal manner.
According to James (1984), laboratory research carried out on pornography, and its harmful effects on the interests of women can be classified into three categories. These categories include extremely violent, degrading but non-violent and explicitly sexual but non-degrading and non-violent. Pornography has become more acceptable in the recent decades both culturally and legally (Boyle ,2010). This has led to the business of using organization and includes many corporations being carried out extensively. However, women are often forced to participate in the pornography industry. It may not be difficult to find women willing to participate in the business, but they face harsh sexual abuse from their clients (Kosut, 2012). However, some bold women who participate in these pornographic businesses willingly consider it as a well paying method of earning money.
This laboratory research proves how the various categories affect and individual and their relationships. The category of extremely violent pornography may be considered harmful and dangerous and has led to break-ups and divorces. The third category which is extremely sexual but non-degrading is one which is mostly used for business purposes. Here, the ladies used in the business are paid for being sexually involved with clients.
(Paletz ,1999) asserts that a correlation data shows that the pornography may have benefits to the society meaning that it may be good for the society, but bad for an individual. This is because according to statistics many men have opted to view erotic pornography through the internet and has led to decreased number of sex crimes such as rape. However, the above correlation data also shows that may people have become addicts to the viewing of pornography. Sexual and pornography addicts blame the internet for their addiction, but the fact is that they are to blame personally. When in pornography addiction, an individual is completely out of control of their actions and it may lead to various lifestyle and relationship problems (Paletz ,1999). However, individuals are supposed to be in control of what they view and the extent to which they engage in these activities of pornography.
Studies of sex offender such as rapists and child sexual abuse may not necessarily be blamed on pornography. This is because according to correlational data as explained above, sex crimes appear to be less among people who watch pornography. There have been arguments on the connection between sexual offenders and pornography. In rape cases, the number of reported cases about rape draws complete confusion where most offenders refute being participants in pornography. Sexual offenders can be basically reasoned as being sexually active due to viewing too much pornography to the point that they cannot control their sexual desires. This could be termed as addiction and only occurs when an individual has over indulged in pornographic activities. Sexual crimes are mostly triggered by other factors such indulgence in drugs and alcohol or even temptations triggered by the female counterparts. Therefore, pornography is more of a benefit in reducing sexual offenders unlike claims that it increases sexual offences.
(Subrahmanyam,2011) affirms that anecdotal evidence on pornography has used information collected about women involved in the pornography business to conclude that the women face psychological and physical damage. They result to the use of drugs and alcohol in order to relieve themselves from the depressing aftermath. According to collected statistics about pornography, many participants in the above are also involved in drug and alcohol abuse. On the positive side, according to anecdotal evidence, some of the people who participate in pornography appear to be more psychologically relaxed and physically fit. Sex is considered as a necessary exercise for healthy bodies and once people watch pornography, it may help in practicing some important facts for the sake of staying physically fit.
The drugs and alcohol distort the mind into a temporary feeling of happiness and daring actions where they can engage in prostitution. The psychological damages on the women would be feeling inferior and degraded than the male species. This has led to belief that women can be used as sex objects where they can be exposed naked for the pleasure of men (Boyle ,2010). In some cases, some women face harsh sexual activities such as gang sex that may damage their sexual organs. Another physical damage would be in terms of health where they may contradict various sexual diseases with the most common being the HIV/AIDS. Victims of rape and other sexual offences face trauma and other psychological problems which may even be fatal. Some of the victims may even consider suicide as they feel defiled if raped by strangers.
Another major form of physical abuse would be sexual assault or violence which is under the first category of pornography. This is the overly violent type of pornography and mostly involves an unwilling participant being forced into sex. In these cases, women may often be seen suffering from bruises and other wounds as result violence from the men. This shows how men appear to be superior over the women even in a marriage. Sexual violence and assault have also spilled over to a sexual assault on children especially in terms of rape.
Today, the media have become a source of all types of information where even pornography can be accessed easily. This has led to the rise in pornography sites and scenes viewed by people all around the world. The access to pornography can be easily viewed even using mobile phones that appear to be a common gadget available to large population including children. This helps in educating the internet users on various facts about sex such as safe sex and other sexual information which may not be learnt in class or taught by parents. Therefore, the use of media in showing pornography is part of outdoor education especially in a generation where sex is not easily and openly discussed.
The public television and radio shows have managed to censor their shows from displaying strong sexual content and yet the rate of pornography is still on the rise. The internet being the largest source of pornography and even the use of some magazines intended for adults but eventually reach to underage children. These magazines may contain images of female insubordination where they may be naked being used by men playing cards. They may also be displayed like animals or behaving like animals. There exist various feminists who still dwell in the conservative way of life where they consider pornography as a vice.
Through the media, pornography has also become a career for some individuals who act pornographic movies that are then sold. This business has contributed in the spread of this pornographic menace because the disks are circulated all over the world. This has helped the entertainment industry especially in romantic and love scenes that must involve sexual activities. However, the only matter would be the individual watching the pornographic material should be of permissible age.
