More Gun control laws need to be enacted because it will significantly reduce the number of gun-related suicides and murders in our society (Cornell.edu, 2017). Enaction of stricter gun control laws does not infringe individual’s constitutional rights but help to control the numbers of gun circulation in the society (Insana, 2017). Additionally, this method has been fully proven before to be very effective. This idea has been a very controversial topic of discussion all around the world. But for a peaceful society, country, and or a peaceful world, gun control is necessary. Furthermore, it helps to reduce unnecessary loss of many lives we do experience daily (Esposito & Finley, 2014). Stricter gun control laws should be enacted and executed to solve the challenges of crime and reduce mass shootings within our country borders.
Considering recent event of shooting that happened at Sandy Elementary School, gun controls have heated up (The Lancet. (2017). There are many reasons individuals claim of owning and even using guns. In regards to the second amendment of the constitution in the United States, it gives citizens right to own guns. But the question is, what does a well-regulated militia imply as per the constitution statement? And what are the major reasons for gun control in our society and countries? In this controversial topic, there are two groups having very diverse opinions in regard to the enaction of gun control laws (Smith & Spiegler, 2017). Some argue that there are positive effects of enacting gun control laws since they believe that guns should be taken off the streets. While there is another group of individuals arguing that, in accordance with the constitutional right to own a gun and that support guns bearing, citizens should have guns (Street, 2016).
Considering statistics of the total number of murder victims in the gun shooting, many innocent people lose their lives unnecessarily. Statistics indicate that Homicides in united state is 7 times higher than any other populated and high income earning countries. Additionally, roughly 10,000 individuals have violence of guns related accidents every year in the United States alone (Swift, 2017). Statistics from various research shows that resident owning firearms are at higher risk of committing suicides than those without firearms (The Lancet. (2017). Additionally, there is evidence that individuals are more likely to kill their family members or friend more than intruders, due to differences family chaos. Similarly, there is a high rate of suicides in countries having a high level of firearms ownership than those without. Statistics further indicate that stressed individuals having firearms were involves in committing suicides more than those without (Smith & Spiegler, 2017).
According to Smith & Spiegler, (2017), statistics alone cannot prove the harms guns have impacted in our society. There are very many stories from children who have been left fatherless, women who have been left widowers and parents who have lost their children in mass school shootings or in streets. Therefore, misuse of guns has negative impacts on our society. Firstly, stricter gun control laws should be in existence because without the law saying otherwise, firearms can be in wrong hands which could otherwise lead to loss of innocent lives (Street, 2016).
On the supportive side of the concern for stricter gun control laws in our country, there are diverse ways and the basis of keeping our environment safer. According to Esposito & Finley, (2014), when we adopt and allow enaction of stricter gun control laws, there will be a significant decrease in the overall number of accidental shootings that we experienced daily in our society. Additionally, these laws will also make it hard for criminals to get hold of guns. Similarly, it will help lower the number of unnatural deaths caused by guns and further eliminating the purchase of semi-automatic weapons that are the leading types of firearms used especially in mass shootings (Cornell.edu. 2017).
On the other hand, it’s argued that stricter firearms control laws creations may not have greater effects on controlling the overall number of deaths from guns. According to Insana (2017), this is because individuals will still acquire guns through back doors as they simply need them for self-defense. According to the Journals of Public Health, the United States tops the list of the nation in terms of guns related deaths (Swift, 2017).
When we look at the second amendment of constitution regarding gun control laws in united state, it states that “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” it is totally a strong rationale for gun control advocates (Cornell.edu. 2017). However, the antagonists’ argument of firearms rights has also made use of the Second Amendment of the constitutions as a basis for unstructured firearms ownership. Firearms advocates, therefore, sees firearms control policy as an attack on the Second Amendment of the constitution (Swift, 2017).
Considering the united state second amendment of the constitution, the language of the constitution refers to a well, regulated militia, and ordinary citizens are not considered part of the militia (Cornell.edu. 2017). When we interpret, the wordings of the second amendment of the constitution, in accordance with its simple meaning. We make conclusions that the constitutional right to have guns is indissolubly in connection with the protection of militia. Similarly, the right is not underwritten by the second amendment (Insana, 2017).
Therefore the purpose of this second amendment was clearly for the military purposes during war or coercion (Smith & Spiegler, 2017). This makes it not analogize directly to an ordinary citizen living a normal life. The United States on 1st October 2017, behold worst mass shooting episodes that were carried out by a US citizen gun owner. There has been a lot of uncertainty in the US following the shooting incidences making stricter gun control to uphold. There were 59 people who died and almost 500 others sustained gunshot injuries (Purcell, 2013).
According to Street (2016), in the year 1996, there was a mass murder that left 35 people dead, in Port Arthur, Australia. After this happening, Australian prime minister instigated assertive gun control laws. During this period, about 600000 semi-automatic and automatic gun machines were destroyed (Smith & Spiegler, 2017). Additionally, the government brought numerous control measures and checks. Since then, Australia has experienced a significant drop in firearms homicide and mass shooting has significantly dropped (Swift, 2017).
Another instance, the Britain government prohibited private gun ownership after a gunman killed 16 students and their tutor (Purcell, 2013). Additionally, Japan enacted stricter gun control laws that saw a significant reduction in gun-related deaths. Given the instances of mass shootings experienced by other nations and the US state, we can comfortably argue that the Second Amendment of the constitution regarding rights of holding guns is largely misconstrued to have a different meaning and what Constitution framers never meant. There is nothing that can indemnify the loss of human life. Unnatural death caused by another human being is even worse (Insana, 2017).
On the other hand, dissenters of stricter gun control laws contend that enaction and implementation of gun control laws will infringe citizens’ right to self-defense (Smith & Spiegler, 2017). I find this argument insensible because the security of every individual is the role of federal government. The government ensures this is done by maintaining robust security services. Similarly, this argument of self-defense may lose its validity if a person is unable to defend himself in the first place against himself. This is evident when an individual harms himself knowingly or unknowingly using firearms they possess. Therefore it vividly indicates that they lack th...
