Pros and Cons of the Legalization of Marijuana in the United States
Marijuana refers to a mind-altering drug extracted by drying the leaves, flowers, seeds, and stems of the cannabis plant. The use of this drug has side effects on individuals' bodies. Despite the adverse effects of the use of marijuana, its legalization has been debated in the United States for over a century. This debate holds some advantages and disadvantages both in the medical sector and in the cannabis industry.
There are several advantages to the legalization of marijuana in the medical and economic sectors. Firstly, it is proven of importance in the medical community; it serves some medicinal purposes on chronic illnesses (Velder, 2019). It is believed to act as a chronic pain reliever, soothe anxiety and increase appetite, which results in improvements in cancer patients' conditions. Therefore, it should be used for people who have cancer under the prescriptions given by scientific experts.
Secondly, legalizing the drug will encourage investment. According to Schultz (2019), authorization of marijuana will lead to overall economic development in the United States. New industries and supply chain businesses will be expected to emerge, leading to financial improvements. As a result, these industries will create job opportunities that will reduce levels of unemployment. Upon creating jobs in areas of cultivation, manufacturing, and retail, the act will help reduce crimes against a property by decreasing the number of idlers in the streets.
