Brennan Mukhiyi
Past Work
Abstract
Cloning remains one of the most controversial issues in the world today. Around 1996, the first successful animal clone came into existence through the efforts of a scientist called Dr. Ian Wilmut and his team. It was a sheep named Dolly. It then became the most famous sheep in the world. Since then cloning has been immensely debated, raising both ethical and legal queries. This article seeks to answer one of the major questions that arise when the subject on cloning is discussed; should cloning be legalized?
Introduction
In common parlance, cloning is defined as the process of regenerating populations of the same genetics. Levina (2007) defines cloning as “reproduction without sex” (p. 2).According to past research, there are three types of cloning namely; DNA cloning, embryo cloning and therapeutic cloning, Emilia (2004).
In the effort to explore if cloning should be legalized or not, we should try to understand to pros and the cons of cloning.
The Pros of Cloning
Ideally, there exists a possibility to clone any living thing. This ranges from animals, plants and human beings. Since 1996 when Dolly was born, there has been a subsequent development in cloning which include: cloning of a dog, buffalo, horse and plants. According to Zastrow (2016), there is a lab in Korea that clones around five hundred new animals each day. This implies that cloning can be used to increase the population of endangered species of animals and plants.
Grafting which is a type of vegetative propagation is a very common agricultural technique currently. It’s practiced not only in horticulture like flowers but also in trees like mango trees. Grafting which is a cloning procedure has facilitated maximum yield production in agriculture which indeed justifies the importance of cloning.
Moreover cloning has played a very important role in medical research spheres like organ transplantation and stem research.
The Cons of Cloning
The idea of cloning humans has raised fear among people. Eisenberg (1996) suggests that human cloning would be catastrophic.
