Should Women Have a Right for Abortion?
The debate concerning should women have a right to abortion has been discussed for several decades. Proponents and opponents of abortion have not been able to agree on the issue since each side believes they are right. Nevertheless, most nations have decriminalized abortion, including the USA, which has enshrined women’s right to terminate pregnancy in its Constitution (The Lancet, 2019). Women should have a right to abortion for several reasons.
Foremost, despite abortion being criminalized in some countries by their governments, studies reveal that the number of abortions occurring has not changed (Todd-Gher, 2019). Banning abortion does have the intended effect of preventing women from carrying it out. On the contrary, making abortion illegal only prevents qualified doctors from performing safe abortions. Women who want to undergo the procedure are left to turn to quack doctors who subject them to unsanitary conditions increasing the likelihood of death during feticide. Women should, therefore, be allowed the right to abortion so that they may seek the services of professional medics and undergo safe miscarriages to save their lives.
