Social changes occurring during the 1920s
Introduction
The 1920s was a period of change. Change that occurred in all the dimensions either socially or economically in regards to growth, expansion of infrastructure, change in lifestyle and cultural change that demystified all odds. The change was evidently seen as most and close to half American people lived in towns were automobiles were the in thing. It was an era that marked a new dawn in revolution.
Automobiles
Lifestyle was a dramatic social change that occurred in the 1920s (Popenoe, 2008). The changes in lifestyle revolved around several cases that had to do with social class. The forms and change in lifestyle include the replacement of trolleys with buses, increases access to news and information, an increase in the interest people had in sports, daily changes in household management with inventions and innovations such as refrigerators and vacuum cleaners (Drowne and Huber, 2004).
Access to information and news
Similarly the 1920s faced a dramatic social change that included a widespread increased access to information and news in general (Gillmor, 2008). It was in this era that motion pictures became popular and radio begun to play music and shows for the public to listen to. Besides listening to music the general public saw sport activities in motion pictures and interest in sports had its onset on the same era. It is on the same era that Babe Ruth became famous due to the extensive media coverage that begun to take center stage (Ayers et al, 2008).
Women roles
The social change within the 1920s massively changed women roles in the wider social spectrums. In was in the 1920 era that women began to take a role in the workforce just like their counterparts who were dominating in the workforce sector (Drowne and Huber, 2004).Nevertheless this was necessary as women had a need to attain self-dependency through accusation of money and hence defy parental authority.
Jazz and blockbuster movies
Talk of Jazz age and the 1920s was the onset of jazz music (Jackson, 2003). It is worthy to note that the 1920s was and is commonly termed as the jazz age. Jazz music got its pillar stone in this era where the likes of Louis Armstrong, Cole porter and Duke Ellington would bring the classical influence of the African expression to concert halls (Wards and Burn, 2001). Box office movies had their fame in this era as Walt Disney produced their first cartoon Alice Wonderland (Nicholas, 2014).
African American literature
The era yet again was marked by the flourishing nature of literature in forms of narratives and arts with persons of African American origin. This is evidenced by the Nobel peace prize won by Toni Morrison (Gillespie, 2012). The 1920s experienced a major turning point in African-Amer with such master piece work of literature and artwork emerging and defying the odds of superiority between the black people and the white people.
The Jim Crow Laws
This law was set aside to and advocated black men from voting. All men with African American origin were barred from voting (Alexander, 2013). This law separated people from color with the jurisdiction ranging from school, housing jobs, and places where there is public gathering. The effects of these instigated on black people posed as a hindrance to social and economic growth. Similarly, in regards to Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) the Supreme Court considered the law of providing two separate railway lines for the white people and the black people (Fisher, 2003). This prompted black people to be on separate waiting bays from the white people. The social change that occurred in the 1920s was the effects of this kind of scenario.
