Abstract
Suicide stands out as one of the leading cause of injury and death in the world nowadays. Having adequate information about the risk factors of such suicidal behavior is equally important for making policies and prevention. In this paper, articles and papers on suicide and suicidal behavior, risk factors and prevention strategies have been reviewed. The aim was to assess the risk factors, prevalence and highlight the prevention techniques. Suicidal behavior cuts across all ages and status. The rich, middle class, the poor, old aged and the young adults all are vulnerable to depression and suicides. The incidences of suicides has kept on increasing over the past decade despite treatment of suicidal persons. Suicide is more prevalent in men while nonfatal attempted suicides being common among women, young unmarried people and those suffering from psychiatric disorders.
Introduction
Suicide has become a challenging problem worldwide. Over a million suicides cases are reported each year worldwide (Nock et al., 2008). As a result level of production is being undermined. Reports indicate that $11.8 billion productivity value is lost each year in the United States (Nock et al., 2008). It is projected that suicide will become the largest contributor of global burden in the coming decades.
