STANDARDS-BASED LEARNING OBJECTIVES (Essay Sample)

Assessment Description
Teachers of social studies and the arts are challenged to develop standards-based curriculum that integrates current local and global issues into instruction. Doing so engages students in applying content knowledge to real-world problems. To develop a standards-based curriculum, educators must first research grade-level specific state academic standards for social studies in order to align learning objectives with required learning standards.
The Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels are an extension of the Know, Understand, and Do guidelines and activate complexity in thinking, rather than just focusing on content.
There are four levels that allow students to engage with content in various ways:
Recall and Reproduction
Skills and Concepts/Basic Reasoning
Strategic Thinking/Complex Reasoning
Extended Thinking/Reasoning
Use the “Unwrapping the Standards” template to complete this assignment.

Video: “Art and Social Studies Unite” by Michele Snyder
Yes, the teacher has modeled academic language and critical thinking skills. The teacher is selective about the kind words she uses. She allows the student to extend their artistic and social knowledge when she requests them to sing. She keeps on repeating some words while teaching. She uses words relevant to the subject she is teaching to ensure a proper understanding of the concepts by the students. Engaging students in repeating whatever she teaches is crucial in ensuring the students understand by memorizing. While teaching the students in groups, she is promoting in depth-knowledge; through the group, the students can manipulate the words. Repeating is a form of memorization and is the easiest method of improving the recall ability among learners. The students are given instructions to help them manipulate words; she repeats some words in these instructions to help them understand better. The students are encouraged to read out loud. The teacher gives the students time to read on their own.
The teacher has constructed questions from what she taught the students to answer; she uses this as a questioning strategy. She has developed several questions in sequence for her students, which helps them recall what they have been taught. By asking and answering the questions, students gain the courage to learn more and attain self-esteem that enables them to yearn for more (Snyder, 2016). The questions are from the topic she is teaching, thus bringing better understanding and making it easy for the student to remember what they have learned and the topic. Through the teacher's questioning strategy, the students can recall, reason, think, and interpret different concepts according to their understanding. These strategies help the students to come up with multiple approaches and extended thinking. The teacher’s ability to engage the students in the learning process makes the class lively and helps them develop strong relationships. These developed interactive lessons are significant in exhibiting the ability of teachers to model academic language and critical thinking skills.
