When a person gets fired from a job, there are some changes he undergoes. A person mostly undergoes negative changes in personality. When someone has another job, a part-time job or a hobby he wants to perfect, this person may occasionally think about resigning from the job and start his own thing and also enjoy the freedom that comes along with the own boss thing. However, as research shows, spending a lot of time away from work may have negative effects on the character traits of some individuals. This specific research shows that unemployment can cause some inevitable personality changes among individuals.
Research Design
The research was carried out by Professor Christopher J. Boyce from the University of Stirling. The sample chosen included both employed and unemployed participants. The research was conducted over a four-year period over which some of these participants got unemployed over time. The research was conducted to investigate the experiences that people undergo when unemployed.
Results and Discussion
Results show that agreeableness (friendliness) decreased among the participants who happened to be unemployed over the four-year period. However, the first two years into unemployment finds men increasing in friendliness terms. The researchers do not have any explanation regarding the disparity among males and females but some claim that men try to cope with the situation better than their female counterparts. The results also indicated that the orderliness that is mainly associated with the females tend to decrease over time. So does the issue about motivation. These people get less motivated by the day.
The study also reveals that openness decreases among the unemployed people. Boyce did not examine the reasons stating this case but rather argues that these people become less inspired and less adventurous. This makes them less accessible to opportunities that may pass by.
