Substantive and Emotional Conflicts
Conflicts are an inevitable part of our lives in both our personal and professional settings. Whether they are substantive or emotional, conflicts can have a significant impact on our lives, relationships, and performance. I have experienced and witnessed both types of conflict and have seen many different approaches to resolving them.
Substantive conflicts stem from disagreements about facts, goals, or strategies. These are often based on conflicting interests, values, or points of view. For example, I once worked on a team project at school where two teammates had different ideas about managing the project timeline. We eventually reached a compromise in which we would try both approaches in parallel and assess our progress after a certain period. This allowed us to satisfy both strategies while staying on track with the project.
Emotional conflicts are based on emotions, such as anger, fear, or frustration. These often arise when people have difficulty resolving their substantive conflicts, which can escalate the situation.
