Restorative justice programs allow the victim to participate willingly. The system ensures the victims understand their rights and responsibilities and decide when to attend or revoke their participation. This provision ensures the programs serve the intended purpose of ensuring justice for the victim and allowing them to recover from the impacts of the ordeal. Defendants have no right to attend the services if the victim is unwilling to participate. The various benefits of victims' attendance make it necessary to ensure both parties participate in the process.
The victim is at the heart of restorative justice. Restorative justice programs are essential to allowing the victim to meet and communicate with the offender (Suzuki & Yuan, 2021). The process is critical to allowing the offender to understand their actions' impact on the other person. As a result, the lack of victim involvement makes the whole process lose its original meaning.
