Chapter 1: Intimations of a just learning society
Intimations can be termed to be passive suggestions. A just society is one that is fair or reasonable. A just learning society is very hard to find as discrimination is bound to either occur by race or perhaps background discrimination (Fenwick, 2006). The first chapter of the book contexts of adult education (a Canadian perspective), therefore, tries to illustrate and explain the suggestions brought about by the existence of a fair and reasonable society in learning.
Fenwick argues that a just learning society will promote social cohesion; develop active inclusion and participation among citizens. Learning centers in society will obviously bring about interaction among people of different backgrounds. This will no doubt develop cohesion among people. People will be more actively included in societal affairs and as such active participation of people will also develop.
A just learning society will foster an environment that will promote the development of skills, competences and knowledge. Learning institutions are meant to develop and nurture raw talent, and if people can access them in equal measure regardless of race or financial background, then talents, skills, competencies and knowledge will be easily developed among the citizens. Society will, therefore, be developed in the long run as time passes.
Among the many reasons for creating a just learning society is the mere fact that education can be used as a tool for building learning societies and eventually learning workplaces. Education is meant to transform people into better persons in society in terms of productivity and hence development. Many people in the working society currently do not have a learning culture. This can be attributed to the inadequacy of the education inculcated since the youth. Adults must as such be justly provided with education so as to maintain and develop a learning workplace. This will no doubt increase productivity at the workplace (Fenwick, 2006).
Chapter 2: Histories of aboriginal adult education

This, however, did not start recently as the aborigines in Canada had already started adult education even before the European colonization in Canada. The aborigines are Canada’s original people. Aboriginal education was situated such that adults were the channels via which the knowledge passed on to children.
Education among the aborigines began at childhood, and the society was the main channel that conveyed these education principles. Like many other cultures the Indians used puberty as an age grade to initiate the youth from childhood to adulthood. Education can thus be seen to be po...
