Resocialization is a process by which a person’s sense of social beliefs, norms and values are re-engineered through an intense social procedure that may be carried out in a total institution. The resocialization observed in the above image involves controlling the lives of the subjects to the extent that their beliefs and values are drastically altered. A notable characteristic of the process observed in the picture is that the subjects are ordered what to do as well as when to do it; with severe punishment being given to those who violate, such as a court martial. In a military boot camp, the instructors may put some effort aimed at weakening the subjects’ self-identity and ensuring conformity to the camp’s rules. This involves them having to wear uniform, getting similar haircuts, and in some cases being referred to by new names. Military boot camps sergeants sometimes treat members harshly in an effort to make everyone appear similar to one another than would otherwise be the case. This practice is often seen as necessary for weakening the subjects’ self-identity and inducing military discipline and readiness. Resocialization often takes part in two processes; the first one being attempts by the institution’s staff to erode sense of independence and identities of the subjects. The second part is all about trying to systematically come up with a different self or personality. This is when the subjects alter their behavior in a way that fits the expectations of the institution or the authority figure.
Resocialization does have a number of benefits. It is meant to radically change the personality of a certain individual by carefully controlling his or her environment.
