In one way or the other, we find ourselves as members of at least one group and some of us are members of many groups. Sometimes we have no choice as to whether to join a group. Sometimes we join functional groups simply by virtue of joining them and accepting a particular job assignment that needs working with a designated group of other people (Hogg, Hohman & Rivera, 2008). The most important reason we join a group is the individual need satisfaction. Below are the main reasons why people join groups.
Opportunity for interaction- mostly people join groups to interact with each other so that they can discover what they have in common. This leads to the friendship that people consider it desirable. In the organizations, the offices are designed to allow people interact in the group during their working time.
People join groups to participate in the group activities. People join groups because group activities appeal to them. So the groups form around a common political and cultural philosophies, ethnic and religious, age, sex, intelligence or social interests (Hogg, Hohman & Rivera, 2008).
Group goals-people join groups due to the interests and goals that are common and require good cooperation with friends to achieve goals. This is a powerful force that leads to the formation of groups. In most cases, people working in the same organization may join each other to achieve a common goal of the organization. Some goals cannot be achieved by individuals unless through a group of people staying together. In addition, some people join groups because of the similar intellectual and recreational goals and pursuits (Purk, 2004).
