Forces for Technology Adoption
Within the context of technology, adoption is the selection of a certain technology to be use by an individual or a company. Technology adoption is essential in allowing people to participate in the ever changing world where modern technology has become vital to human beings. The most obvious determinants for consumer demand for technology are the cost of adoption and the benefits enjoyed from the technology (Bronwyn & Beethika, 2002). In most cases, these benefits are the profits obtained for instance when an organization decides to use a newer technology. For consumers, the benefits may include non-economic factors such as the desire to be the first one to use the new technology (Bronwyn & Beethika, 2002). Regarding the costs, consumers tend to adopt and use technology whose cost is favorable for them.
Individual factors that shape consumer demand for technology include prior experience, personal innovativeness, perceived usefulness as well as enjoyment (Yi, Park & Probst, 2006). Within this context, consumers tend to adopt the technology that is suitable and applicable in their daily activities such as business operations. The social environment also plays an important role in changing the perception and attitude of an individual towards technology demand (Ghuman, 2010). In others words, a consumer’s adoption of technology may be influenced by the people around him or her whose opinions are essential (Ghuman, 2010).Change of perception can lead to the success of the technology or application.
Consumer demand and technology adoption is also influenced by the ability to learn on its usage. We know that adoption of technology is a five step process that includes awareness, assessment, acceptance, learning and usage (In Majumdar, In Guha & In Marakkath, 2015). Learning is the process in which the consumer develops the skills necessary for using the technology to be adopted. Therefore, consumers tend to adopt a technology that they are certain to learn its usage.
