Technological determinism theory presumes that the society’s cultural values and social structure is stimulated by its current technology. Technological advancement follows a predictable and traceable path that is independent of cultural or political influence (Ray 2013). The theory influences the performance of a company by shaping the process and practice of a manager.
There are various ways that the technological determinism theory shapes the process and practice of a manager. First, the theory assumes that the current technology influences the way people think and feel. The manager will be compelled to make drastic changes in case of a change in technology. Lagging behind will make the company products obsolete and outdated. This may lead to huge losses on the company (Christensen 2013).
Secondly, technological determinism postulates that it is completely difficult to control technology. This means that technological progress cannot be hampered by any person. The manager might be forced to implement urgent change in either production or distribution to adapt to an emergent technology (Ellul 2007). Failure to change will automatically lead to the company producing commodities or services that do not appeal to people’s tastes.
Thirdly, technological progress determines the societal history. Technological innovation leads to transformation in societal values and feelings. Therefore, a manager has to come up with innovative products to appeal to these feelings and values of the customers (Jordan 2008). However, it is a risky process that involves testing the acceptability of new product in a society (Perez 2003).
Lastly, technological determinism can act as an evaluation tool for the manager. It provides evidence of how the organisation has developed over time and the changes that have taken place. The innovativeness of the manager is, therefore, easily determined (Smith 1994). This information may act as a guiding instrument for future innovation plans or provide managers with the opportunity to reconsider innovation processes.
In conclusion, the technological determinism approach influences the processes and practice of a manager. It has wide applicability that can propel an organisation to greater heights. In addition, it has been identified that innovation is key to prosperity of any organisation. The managers are encouraged to use the knowledge of this approach to make decisions on organisation innovative processes and practice.
