Milestone 2: Requirements Document
In 3-2 Final Project, you will submit the requirements document. The format should be in a request for proposal (RFP) format tailored to a database project and specifies the following elements and requirements: (a) brief business background, (b) purpose of the database, (c) general description of the data elements that will serve as inputs to the system, (d) required reports/outputs/views of the system, (e) expected users of the system and their roles, (f) estimated initial size and growth rate of the database, and (g) security requirements of the database. Your discussion for each of the preceding elements should be thoroughly covered. Submit your requirements document as a word-processed document.
Requirements Document
This will entail of the following elements:
a) The Transnational Railroad is a company that was developed to handle shipping of bulk goods between the USA and West Coast and East coast. It is also use between the internal cities within the United States. Therefore it is a company that easens the smooth flow and transportation of freight goods within the different coutries.
b) The purpose of the database
The company has found a need to create a database that will ensure that all the activities can be monitored and controlled with ease. This database will enable the company to receive and get the latest information and technologies. In the long run it will reduce overhead costs and enhance revenues. Alongside that it will maintain a high degree of customer satisfaction.
c) General description of the data elements that will serve as inputs
the basic inputs will be coal, oil and grain. These are going to be put in large freight trains known as general merchandise trains. In most instances the inputs will be channeled to the receiver stations along the specific routes. This ensures that there is uniformity in the way that those commodities are going to be transported to the common destinations. Technical specifications of components to be used include the freight trains, freight cars, locomotives, routes, district or area of operation, crew involved and the employees of Transnational Railway Company. The freight trains are used to ferry the bulk commodities from one area where the goods are received. Then the commodities are moved to a common destination to enhance free and easier distribution.
The freight cars are one of the commodities that are used for transportation from one place to the desired area. Therefore it is an input and an important element in the handling of the operations of the company.
The locomotives are affected when the railroads have to be maintained to ensure there is safety in terms of transportation and mileage.
(d) The required reports/outputs/views of the system include the items that have been discussed below:
The system will output the financial analysis of all the data in the database. This will include the number of commodities. This will lead to effectiveness in terms of the way that the operation are done.
It will also ensure that the activities can be controlled with ease. Other corporate information will also be appended into the database so that it can be used by the respective stakeholders.
The reports about financial analysis are also expected to be output in form of reports by the system. Financial records are the backbone of the company and will therefore help in providing efficiency to the Transnational Railroad through analyzing these reports by the top management.
The output is expected to be in form of reports that will show the train numbers, time of arrival alongside other features that include location of origin and location of destination.
The schedules within the operations of the company are also expected as output to show how schedules were done. The master schedule table will also tell the point of origin and the desired point of destination.
Output of time of departure and arrival is also output from the database. The views in form of screenshots can be seen and used to act as output from the system.
The company maintains an employee table containing the employee id, name, contact number, address, district code, availability status, and job type. This one can also be used in cases where we want to get the details of availability status for a certain person so that job allocation is done to him or her.
The events list is also one important output that cannot be ignored. This ensures that the list of all events done can be stipulated in form of a report. It can also be used to showcase all events that are outlined to be done in a normal working day.
e) The expected users of the system and their roles are as shown below. The users are the people who are the stakeholders who are going to be directly or indirectly involved in the system. These are the people who are involved in operations in order to ensure that the goals of the organization are met.
