Compare and Contrast the features of the cable modem System Verses DSL for Remote Access.
A cable modem remote system uses existing television lines system to transmit digital data. It's receiving and sending speed vary from low megabits to high Megabits per second of operation (Khasner and Hunter, 2004). The DSL modem system uses phone line connected to a computer to transmit digital data. In modern computers that use DSL system, they contain inbuilt modem (Voice-band modem) that is dialed up to connect to the internet. Another old model of computers requires the user to buy a purchase an external modem so as to use the DSL system (Khasner and Hunter, 2004).
Although the two methods are almost similar, both have different features that make each other different from one another from the mode of operation to installation. For example, in cable system the upload speed is slightly lower compared to that of DSL system, but in receiving data, Cable is more reliable and faster than the DSL system (Khasner and Hunter, 2004). Cable system in many cases is expensive than DSL, but DSL sometimes may not be available in remote areas, but cable system is locally available. DSL system gives a chance to choose different connection speed, but Cable systems do not allow that. Finally, DSL system is affected by the distance from the provider's central location with the longer the distance, the lower the transmission but cable is not affected by servers distance (Khasner and Hunter, 2004).
Although the two have a broad range of differences, there are similarities that do exist between the two systems, depending on their operation and installation also (Khasner and Hunter, 2004). The two systems provide an "always-on" connection. This is the ability of the two systems staying connected to the internet if the system is turned on. Also, the two systems have a payment plan billed on monthly basis. Finally, the two systems use Macintosh or Windows computers without trifling.
