The invention of Smartphones and tablets that have incorporated desktop operating systems has placed the global information at the fingertips of the user. Their use has changed the landscape of communication in organizations, private life and the society as a whole. Many employees are making use of their phones at work which has significant effects on Information Technology management, support and security. Their use is changing how employees divide their time to respond to office matters and personal tasks and how fast business is done and the work place. Bowles gives a description of digital literacy as the ability to apply information and communications technology such as computers and the use of internet to access social opportunity and work related matters CITATION Bow13 \l 2057 (Bowles, 2013). Computers have provided a set of new knowledge on literacy apart from reading and writing. Digital literacy has made people be knowledgeable in the information sector. This paper highlights the impacts of mobile computing by looking at the perspectives of three authors. Consequently, a conclusion is made according to the view of the writer.
Bowles view on Mobile Computing
Bowles acknowledges that digital literacy has led to the introduction of a new way of literacy which has seen the introduction of information that may be derived from various sources to be used in collaboration and knowledge sharing. With the adoption of other forms of digital literacy, there is an increased use and reliance of the communication modes CITATION Bow13 \l 2057 (Bowles, 2013). Word processing has been accepted as the standard of writing and an increase in the use of email and the World Wide Web too. Further social sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have led to the contribution of knowledge to digital literacy as many people have participated in information sharing through the sites. Today, there is a potential demand and use of knowledge globally; therefore, coming up with more multilingual and multi-literacy platforms since digital technologies lead to world and intercultural exchange CITATION Bow13 \l 2057 (Bowles, 2013). The view of Hague and Payton
In the last decade the evolution of mobile phones and laptops has greatly facilitated the availability of mobile devices to organizations and home users. In recent times smaller portable devices like PDAs have emerged and they have shifted the way that people live and use computers (Hague & Payton, 2010). Computers are undergoing a revolutionary change from being computers and are making dramatic impacts on society, the people and the infrastructure. For instance, sensors have been developed to be placed in clothing; minute cameras have found their way into the homes and offices for enhanced security (Hague & Payton, 2010). Further, Hague and Payton (2010) assert that mobile computing has led to the introduction of mobile hardware, data and software used in computer applications. Digital technologies have been introduced and developed as a world culture. Young people as well as adults use mobile phones. These two groups of people also use websites such as You Tube, Wikipedia, Google, Facebook to search for any information that they may require. In addition, music, television, videos and music are stored and viewed online. The adoption of email necessitates instant communication between one or more people that may be miles away from each other. Mobile computing has made it possible for people to do online shopping and governments have made it possible to access their services through the internet. Both online and offline gaming is a feature in many people’s lives (Hague & Payton, 2010).
Even though there are disadvantages associated with the use of mobile computing, it is true that digital media is now central to many people’s lives irrespective of their age. The skills, knowledge and understanding of digital literacy are congruent to the present generation as a greater majority of them are brought up in a society where mobile computing is the in-thing (Hague & Payton, 2010).
The view of Education Safety Support
Mobile computing has led to the increased need for digital literacy CITATION Edu13 \l 2057 (Education Safety Support, 2013). Digital literacy, in turn has led to greater impacts on schools and the curriculum. For instance, school inspectors and relevant stakeholders in school development will search for indicators of implementation of information communication technology in the curriculum of the school. Consequently, mobile computing and digital literacy has had a major impact on teaching and learning in schools. For example, the curriculum developers ensuring that there is effective learning put up components of digital computing and literacy into extra-curricular activities, adoption of ICT at homes and the enhancement of career skills. The schools ensure that their students are able to adopt the use of computer skills throughout their daily activities and not just in schools. The evidence for such use is in the form of the use of You Tube, Flickr, school extranets and other forms of social media.
