The dawning age of modern video games has stirred a perpetual fear on the ultimate effects of these games on the players. More specifically, violent video games are in the spotlight for being one of the most abused forms of games available. The fact that they are video games, however, does not separate them from the major causes of violent acts in the world today. As such, playing violent video games has undeniable connections with true acts of violence, and there are an abundant number of scenarios and examples to back up this claim.
The Columbine massacre is one flagrant example of the effects of violent video games to its players. 20 April 1999 saw the death of 13 people in Columbine under the hands of two teenagers Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris (Pearce, 2014). Their purpose for the manslaughter, however, was not without reason since investigations revealed that the two teenagers had been heavily influenced by violent video games at that time. The situation also grew stale when the two teenagers turned their weapons on each other as a way of reliving the thrill of the popular first-person shooter games. From this grave act that ensued, lawsuits began creeping up against the video game makers at that time. This massacre underscores the fact that violent video games are indeed connected to acts of violence.
