Within the Getty Center in Los Angeles, USA, two paintings, Regatta on the Grand Canal in Honor of Frederick IV, King of Denmark by Luca Carlevarijs and Irises by Vincent van Gogh are proudly displayed on the Museum South Pavilion, Gallery S205, and Museum West Pavilion, Gallery W204 respectively. An analysis and further comparison between the two paintings could be done in respect to lines, color, texture and shape. Further, aspects of iconography, symbolic messages, the subject matter and the historical contexts could be detailed. The other considerable aspects are the biographical analysis of the artists responsible for the paintings and finally, critical writings about the art. However, if all of these parameters are considered at once, an overarching difference is revealed. While these paintings both show an appreciation for the artists’ surroundings, Van Gogh’s attention is drawn more to natural elements, while Carlevarijs seems to emphasize the beauty of human achievements.
