During Jackson's reign, there was a tremendous rise to what is now considered the cornerstone of American democracy. Many Americans who rejected the old systems accepted the idea of majority rule, previously prohibited by Electoral College. The notion that all white males, regardless of whether they held land or paid taxes, began to gain traction, with some states granting all white men the ability to vote and participate in elections. The "popular choice" social and cultural belief became ubiquitous.
