SYNOPSIS OF THE GERMAN-RUSSIAN TREATY OF RAPALLO
The German-Russian Treaty of Rapallo addressed three significant issues pertinent to cordial relations between German and Russia after World War I. These articles addressed financial, legal and territorial issues. Both parties made agreements to waive the claims and promote cordial relations between them. The parties promised to waive all claims for compensation for expenditures incurred as a result of the war including civilian damages. These settlements also included claims for compensation over the prisoners of war.
One of the legal claims was the treatment of their trading vessels that fell into the hands of either the Germans or Russians. The second was the violation of rights of German Nationals by the Russian Soviet. The third was the legal status of citizens of territories of either nations but of the other party. The waiver of all these claims served to foster healthy relations between Germans and Russians primarily to boost the economic needs of the other. These agreements also enabled both governments to define a legal status for nationals of the other party living in their nations and more so, in creating a habitable environment for the other party’s nationals.
