The ballooning incarceration rate has filled the prison system in many countries around the world. Even as general crime rates trend ever downwards, prisons all over the world, are experiencing significant overcrowding. The punishment for any convicted offender is not always a walk to the jail cell. Moving away from the norm can also help achieve rehabilitation and reduce recidivism by the offenders, young or old . The following are internationally acceptable forms of alternative sentencing: a suspended sentence, probation, fines, forfeiture, restitution, community service, and deferred adjudication/pretrial diversion. Therefore, if the disadvantages of imprisonment outweigh the advantages, substitution is the best path to follow.[Millett, Molly. "Is Alternative Sentencing More Beneficial Than Incarceration: A Focus On Juveniles." (2018).]
