A politician who is unable to understand the constitution and other documents on political matters may not be able to make proper and informed decisions. Having basic knowledge and education gives politicians an upper hand of becoming powerful administrators. In regards to this, the article will undress the problem of educational legitimacy among politicians and why it has not yet been imposed as a constitutional requirement for any person seeking to hold a higher political office. The articles also explore the impacts of uneducated politicians and also provides a methodological solution on how the issue of political educations legitimacy will be actualized in the political environment.
Legitimacy
The prosperity of a country is greatly influenced by the optimist strength of the ruling party. The political parties work towards creating and setting a positive working environment for businesses and people to succeed. Lindgren, Oskarsson, and Dawes (2017) indicate that the political leaders' positions also need to proceed with ethical value to ensure that public welfare benefits are actualized. The ideology of holding political office has been a question of concern concerning their educational legitimacy. Many countries or states are ruled by under-educated and uneducated politicians. It is no that people are not aware of their educational background but they are voted blindly in exchange for gifts and money. Thomas Jefferson indicates that there is a need to form a natural aristocracy indicating that is politicians holding political office need to be talented and have the ability. This idea was primarily a subject of the James Madison approach as the primary author of the United States Constitution (Lindgren, Oskarsson & Dawes, 2017).
In the United States, the aspect of educational legitimacy in politics has been excluded and it is not a requirement for any person willing to run for political office. For instance, the legal requirement for a presidential candidate in the United States remains unchanged since Washington accepted the presidency. The law requires that to run for the presidential office must be an American citizen by birth, be at least 35 years old and must have resided in the United States for at least 14 years. From these requirements, the aspects of educational qualification is not a necessity. Since the issue of education legitimacy has not been defined in the constitution as a necessity for one to run for political office, each person has the opportunity of taking political office. The ideology of democracy has been the defining aspect limiting the establishment of legislative laws that will introduce minimum educational qualifications for political leaders. Erikson and Josefsson (2019) argue that education is about knowledge but leadership is about wisdom and leaders must have confidence and proper commitment. The aspect of education has been left open for voters to decide on which candidate to vote for based on their ideology, communication skills, and performance. Politicians are also legislators responsible for making laws and policies and so they cannot make laws that incriminate, restrict and exclude them from political office (Erikson & Josefsson, 2019).
Runciman (2016) indicates how education has become the greatest divide tearing politics apart which might be assumed as a clash between the enlightened and ignorant. The fundamental divide in democracy has been attributed to education. Runciman (2016) indicates that the spread of conspiracy theories has been blamed on politicians' lack of education spreading through many populist movements. A polling research project conducted by the University of Cambridge found that education makes a difference in regards to a conspiracy theory. During the 2016 American presidential education, the disparity of educational achievement played a significant role in the presidential election. Runciman (2016) indicates that the majority of President Trump's voters were small business owners who never attended college. This has been the same aspect with the Brexit Campaign where Michael Gove indicates that the ‘British people have had enough of experts (Runciman, 2016).' This was a direct attack on educational legitimate politicians where Gove was asking voters without the same educational qualification to reject the education class.
Education is the foundation of modern civilized society, through education peoples minimum intellect and knowledge are enhanced. An educated person in society is considered as a resource for development. Even though the aspect of intelligence and wisdom holds prominence over education, the aspect of education provides wisdom with ground evidence and certainty. Lindgren, Oskarsson and Dawes, (2017) indicate that philosopher Aristotle indicated that indicates that educated individuals differ from the uneducated just like the living differ from the dead. Before the 2002 general election, General Musharraf, President of Pakistan in his executive order imposed a minimum education requirement of any person that was seeking political office indicating that the law would ensure a less corrupt and a more efficient legislature (Lindgren, Oskarsson & Dawes, 2017). The law stipulated that each person running for political office needed to file proof of degree qualification or higher. Even though opposition and human rights official indicates that these laws are exclusionary and undemocratic, they provided the identity of the causal effect of legislator's education on policy outcomes. Legislators make laws that is why they need to be educated and have an intense understanding of the constitution to take part in the legislative process. Educated politicians can make logical and informed decisions about the aspects and policies of a nation (Lindgren, Oskarsson & Dawes, 2017).
