This paper examines the chaotic political climate that existed in Iran during Muhammad’s term, the row between Britain and Iran for the management of Iran’s oil, various strategies that led the US officials to go for a coup d’état and the facts of the coup.
In 1951, Mohammad became Iranian prime minister and rapidly state-owned its British illegal oil industry, instigating a bitter argument between Britain and Iraq that gradually undermined Muhammad’s position. In August 1953, a coup d’état that was put in order and led by CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) overthrew Muhammad. This Coup was vital since it ended a 25 year of dictatorship in Iran that suppressed all protocols of accepted political activity generating strain that contributed to Iranian revolution of 1978-1979.[Blight James, Lang Janet, Byrne Malcolm and Tirman John. Khomeini can be said to be a leader of revolution. It is back in 1963 when Khomeini performed a historic speech not in favor of reliance of Shah’s government on foreign powers. He was instantly arrested; however his imprisonment encouraged major public demonstrations that were ultimately crushed by regime troops. He was arrested for a second time in 1964 and sent into exile to Turkey then to Iraq. He lectured and wrote for 15 years about the regime in his country. He continued his open denunciations, mounting a strong political and religious following abroad. In 1978 he was evicted from Iraq by Saddam Hussein fleeing to France. In 1979 the Iranian government was overthrown marking the return of Khomeini. He was excitedly welcomed by people. He started to exercise vital authority in the country and affirmed an Islamic nation.
In 1979, Khomeini approved the takeover of U.S Embassy by mobilizing Islamic students to arrange a siege on the embassy in Teheran whereby they took its entire staff and 66 Americans on hostage. The activists commanded that Shah be returned to face charges also that return billions of dollars he had taken abroad. Ayatollah Khomeini’s inspirations during this time lead to terrorist bombings, coups, assaults and hijackings against a demonized West. In 1979, the outburst of the Islamic revolt in Iran led to a sequence of key shifts in the military and political arrangements in the entire region of the Middle East. Iran being a close ally to the West brought to a halt its entire ties with the US and consequently with allies of the US notably Israel.
