RESEARCH PROPOSAL
The chosen ethnographies for this research are all on gender sexuality. “Writing women’s Worlds: Bedouin Stories” and “Veiled sentiments: honor and poetry in a Bedouin society” are ethnographies written by Abu-Lughod Lila and published in 1993 and 1986 respectively. These two were selected because they are bound to provide consistent information and examples to support the arguments on feminism. Apart from being thoughts and experiences from the same mind, they are describing the same group of people, the Bedouin. The backup ethnography is “Politics of Piety: The Islamic revival and the feminist subject” written by Mahmood Saba. The backup emphasizes further the topic on feminism and how the women are affected in the society. The fact that Abu-Lughod writings are a representation from the late 20th century, the backup ethnography provides evidence from a more recent past than the first ethnographies.[Mahmood, “Politics of Piety”, 8.]
The Bedouin people is a nomadic group of individuals who speak Arabic residing in the Middle Eastern deserts. The fact remains that this group of people follow Islamic religious beliefs and like most Muslim communities, the position of women in the society is discriminated against. The gender roles in the Bedouin society are very rigid. An individual’s chores and activities for the day are based on sex and age. Children under the age of ten care for the small animals and have lots of time to play around. Women, on the other hand, care for all the household chores and assist their husbands in making family decisions. They cook, collect firewood and milking animals. In simpler words, the family system is patriarchal where women still lack a voice in the society. Women do not participate in significant roles as men for they are still considered inferior.[Mustafa, “"Bedouin Women Face-to-face with Patriarchal Culture", n.p.] [Abu-Lughod, “Writing women’s worlds”, 2.] [Abu-Lughod, “Veiled Sentiments”, 5.]
