The essay that follows Reflects on the project that I carried out a part of a team tasked with assessing and giving a report on the issues that affected Merbatty’s company. Working as a team gave me more insight on what could be easily achieved in a team rather than by working as individuals. Then our course instructor required us to do a research on Enactus, a group that dealt with the empowerment of individuals and communities.
To begin with, as the leader of the team, I had to motivate the team members on the importance of doing a thorough assessment to identify all the issues that affected Merbatty. The team members were really cooperative and we ended up finishing our research in a record short time. This left me reflecting on what can be achieved in the world if people came together to seek solutions to their problems.
First, we identified the problems faced by Merbatty. Having members of the team with diverse knowledge in the operations of a business, this was a simpler job that I had imagined. We sat in committees and brainstormed on the issues. With all the information having availed to our team by the management of the company, we were able to come up with six problems that needed immediate solutions in order to ensure the smooth running of the company. These issues cut across the operations of Merbatty, a company that dealt with the production and sale of boats. Just like all other businesses, I realized that Merbatty was not an exception regarding the challenges being faced in the boating industry.
With the six problems in mind, the team members had to dig deeply into the source of these problems, the implications of the problems to the company in terms of revenues and the company’s reputation, bring forth the possible solutions to each of these problems and make recommendations to the management on how to deal with the problems. This is where the knowledge of the team members regarding the operations of a business unit came in handy. With my experience in management, having been a student leader for two years running, I gave my thoughts on the importance of prioritization of issues. This was appreciated by my team and we ended up making recommendations on the issues that needed handling with urgency as they had negative implications on the revenue of the company and on its reputation. Thus we prioritized on the issue of the supply of the hull which was the main operation of Merbatty. Secondly, we had to handle the issue of the supply of interior designing of the company’s facility in Surania. Another issue that faced Merbatty was an accident that had affected one of the employees who had been working under the influence of drugs and had broken his leg in the accident. This left me thinking on how reckless some people could be. That aside, innovation was part of the team’s agenda with the discussion and recommendations regarding Merbatty’s participation in the designing and construction of a racing boat. From this, I learned a lesson on the importance of research and I promised myself that from then, I could really work hard on research so that at the end of the year, I could come up with a simplified model of doing business. This could be helpful to me once I completed my studies.
Merbatty, just like all other organizational set ups, had conflicts between the shareholders, employees and the management. From this, I learned the importance of conflict resolution strategies as they came in handy at this time. Although the internal wrangles had little or no influence on the reputation of the company, it was paramount that a resolution is reached. Failure to which could lead to the exposure of these problems to the outsiders of Merbatty hence giving their competitor an edge in the business. Even when I thought I had learned enough regarding management of relationships as a leader, I realized from these internal conflicts facing Merbatty that there was more to be learned. On this, I promised myself to register on one of the online courses on the conflict resolution strategies. As a team, we stressed the importance of solving these issues amicably in our recommendations. Failure to which, the company could go crawling on its knees again due to financial and reputational problems.
By this time, I had learned a lot concerning the internal and external issues affecting a business that I could offer a free advice to my parents running a business in the boating industry. I thank my instructor for having chosen me as a leader to this team, my family business improved a lot and I know I can get a share of the proceeds the end of this year. You can be sure that I am really proud of myself.
Back to my classwork, on the second assignment, I had to research it by myself and this was a bit tricky. Having been working as part of as team for almost half-a-year, I was tempted to call on them for help. Integrity could not allow me since this was an individual task. I had to create time to visit the library and do my personal research, which was not an easy task to do. I found it difficult and expressed my frustrations to my friends who suggested that I search for the materials on the internet. Lucky enough, they were all there, thanks to my personality of expressing my frustrations to anyone who cares to listen.
I discovered from the research that Enactus is a group of people, academicians, students and business leaders who have come together in a commitment to use the power of entrepreneurship in the transformation of lives and creation of a more sustainable world. This kept me thinking that in a world full of challenges in the employment world, such a move was a welcome relief. To motivate the selected individuals to work at the project established, I discovered that Enactus had organized a series of regional and nat...
