What is the influence of HRM on employee performance and satisfaction in the utility sector (Gas Company)? The study aimed to connect the relationship between employees and organizational managers and how the relationship may either motivate or discourage employee performance. The study intended to interact directly with employees in the gas industry as well as departmental managers and human resource managers with the aim of understanding the factors leading to improved employee performance.
Factors Influencing Selection of the Research Project
What is the relationship between employee performance and motivation in the workplace? This is the major question that the study sought to answer. To get a comprehensive answer to this question, the study sought to understand the motivational techniques used by different organizations and their impact on employee performance.
Existing Literature Relevant to the Research Project
HRM is the department that entails all the employee activities ranging from recruitment, interview, on-the-job training, and promotion. HR practices may either motivate or demotivate the employees, and this significantly impacts on organizational performance (PYNES, 2013). Studies have established a direct relationship between employee motivation and performance. Motivation in the workplace improves employee morale and readiness to work even in challenging circumstances. This is made possible when the employees realize that the organization is ready to compensate them for any action that positively contributes to organizational success (NOE, 2013).
Research Project Activities
The study made use of qualitative research approach. This is the best approach to answering the research questions because the study is more interested in the quality and level of relationship that exists between the HRM department and employees and not the extent in which this relationship exists. If the research question were designed to investigate the degree and extent of human resource management on employee performance, the result would be measured as statistical data and the quantitative approach would be the best method in that case. The quantitative method is also suitable for the study because it seeks to get answers to the social construction of reality (NOE, 2013). It seeks to record, analyze and uncover the significance and deeper meaning of the behavior of employees as far as performance is concerned and the relationship between them and the human resource manager. The approach enabled the research gain a complex and rich experience of the experiences of employees by considering the performance levels of employees and the human resource policy in the oil industry.
Data Collection Instruments
The method used for data collection was the use of questionnaires both open and closed ended. Closed-ended questions ensured that the answers given were relevant since the respondents had a choice to choose from while open-ended questions had a space provided where the respondents had the freedom to express their feelings and ideas in their words.
Data Collection Techniques
The study sought to answer the research question through direct interaction with the research participants. Both structured and unstructured interviews were conducted on employees in an oil company as well as the management staff in the same industry. Another method used was the quantitative method of data collection. It involved the use of structured questions in questionnaires. The participants in the study were identified and classified, and the research questions were structured in such a way that they would encourage active participation of the employees. The questionnaires also focused on human resource managers who were asked the methods that they applied to motivate their employees. To determine the relationship between the methods and the motivational and performance aspect of the employees, the employees in the industry were also approached with the same set of questions.
