Leadership: Foundational and Critical Perspective
Introduction
Many can agree with the fact that in the modern world, leadership plays a key role in the success of any administration be it in the political landscape or business (Hao, & Yazdanifard 2015, p. 3). However, this is not only leadership but effective leadership. For that reason, leaders who are not clued with intrinsic characteristics of effective leadership are finding it extremely hard to lead businesses to success or even effectively manage their subordinates (Samikshs, 2013). As is known, organizations are founded with the primary purpose of achieving particular goals and objectives; this with the help or knowledge of human groups which therefore makes it an outright task for leaders to manage these groups. For that reason, the aforementioned finding clearly points out that employees, on the other hand, are key components in helping organizations achieve their goals prior to the influence of any other factor.
Nonetheless, leaders can still intervene using their innate and proper leadership approaches to further raise the morale of their subordinates and in consequence further improve the capabilities of their followers. Certainly, this form of leadership portends the idea of how leadership has revolutionized from the traditional styles which were based on control to a reciprocated form of leadership based on establishing relations (Samikshs, 2013). This mention is relatable to the allusions of a myriad of leadership strategists who argue that energy and real power is generated through the existence of strong connections with colleagues. Alternatively, this allusion likewise affirms the fact that that there exists a variation between leadership and management with the latter all about control, planning and overseeing while the former is concerned with inspiring and motivating teams (Bohoris n.d, p. 5). In the modern business environment where almost each and every aspect of business administration is crucial, leadership is preferred to management and as such, leaders who still predispose to the style of management leadership are being compelled to alter their management styles to be more of leaders than actually be managers.
The inception of the two terminologies equally point out variations in them. To be precise, the word management was coined from an Italian word “maneggiare” this implying controlling or managing a horse. Thus, this being the root source of the word, managers, unlike leaders, carry with them many implications in their administration styles going by their understanding of this word. These can be manifested through their maintenance, control, and coordination management styles (Bohoris n.d, p. 7). On the other hand, the word leadership is said to have been drawn from the Germanic dictionaries and it was used to convey meanings like "to cause to go with one," to guide, "to be in front," or "to be in the first place." For the reason that administration in the contemporary world is more centered on the efficacy of relationships, it is the implications of leadership which cause meaning to either the success or failure of contemporary leading causes.
Growing up as an affectionate of leaders, leadership and leadership styles as I do aspire to be in the forthcoming years, I have had a strong eye-mind to contemporary and most influential leaders who have lived on earth from both the political and business spectrum. While on the long list of these I do proclaim leaders such as Telsa and SpaceX Elon Musk, Intuits Brad Smith, Bill’s and Melinda Gates Foundation, Melinda Gates, Rupert Murdoch of News Corporation, Apple’s Tim Cook, Abraham Lincoln and the endless list of others, it is Huawei’s Chai Wei who amid the many most thrills me seeing by the level to which he has managed to grow the Chinese based technology firm to becoming one of the leading Corporations in telecommunication industry (Williams, 2017). Based on the above, this paper will give an overview of the leader; in sight of how he leads that is to say, the leaders’ traits, his leadership style and further my personal views to why among the many global leaders I chose Chai Wei for this discussion and other leadership approaches which can help improve the leaders’ performance.
Overview of the Leader
The relationship between the European Continent and China has much history all way from the traditional times more so with China now ranked the second largest global economy in commerce (De Cremer, & Tao, 2015). As a result, a number of Chinese Corporation are currently receiving a global audience and a share at the global market stage. Of these, Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei counts in the list of China’s most celebrated corporations in this development. Nonetheless, the path to success of the Corporation is quite miraculous for an organization which is remembered for having begun its operations in the testing zones of Shenzhen and now it is regarded as the only true Chinese global Corporation. Assessing by the previous financial postings of the Company, there is reason to believe that the telecom enterprise is only beginning to grow strong with it reported that the Corporation in the financial year of 2014 posted an all-time revenue earnings of CNY288.197 billions CNY27.866 billion as its net profits (De Cremer, & Tao 2015, par 3). Give these global milestones coupled with the humble and cruel conditions, in which the Company began its operations, this ultimately implores the need to research into the leadership traits and styles of a few of the men behind the success of Huawei and in this particular essay, we will draw attention to Chai Wei.
Many will claim that the blueprint to the telecommunication firm largely associated with the Company's CEO because of his inspirational leadership style (Xiaoming, 2019) and the fact that the Company nowadays utilizes a rotational leadership style where leaders in the organization are rotated every after six months (De Cremer, & Tao, 2015). However, seeing that the Company has been engaged in continued innovations with the recent G5 services and Y6 prime tech developments mentionable in the list of these, the Corporations project Director Chai Wei cannot by any mistake be omitted in the list of the organization’s influential leaders whose leadership styles have been crucial to the all-time progression of the Company.
Analyzing by the leadership style of Chai Wei, the leader can, for the most part, be regarded as one who follows the transformational leadership style which is identical of leadership features such as inspiration, search for innovation, risk-taking, experimenting and many more (Avolio et al. 2010). According to a research study which was carried out within the organizations’ research and development department, it was identified that Chai Wei mostly utilizes six leadership approaches that is to say; inspiration, humble dedication, adaptive vision, winning corporations, the power of learning and purpose-driven ambition. Alternatively, observing by the above, Wei can to some extent equally be regarded as a leader who uses a dual leadership style; charismatic leadership and transformational styles.
How Wei Leads
Inspiration
Creating a dedicated workforce in the service of its purpose requires a leader to ensure that most of his employees to be motivated. That said, one of the unfailing characteristics that are identical with Chai Wei is his aptitude to inspire workers. Fei is an aficionado of story narrations and far too often, the project head has made use of this leadership model as a vehicle to convey his initiatives to his subordinates in a more passionate and compelling manner. For instance, in the inception years of the Company, the project leader always prophesied that Huawei would grow to become one of the leading telecommunication giants across the globe even as at the time the Company only employed a total of 200 workers (De Cremer, & Tao, 2015). Yet, the majority of the organization's employees took this to be a myth for a company which had begun its operations in the testing zones of the telecommunication industry where Companies like Ericsson remained undisputed giants of the sector.
Now famous is the story that the project manager once used to prophase at a time when no one believed that Huawei would rise to the echelons where it belongs today. However, notable of Wei’s leadership characteristics is his capacity to inspire workers by introducing in his themes a sense of vitality in regard to the projects which the Company seeks to undertake (De Cremer, & Tao, 2015). In fact, it is remarked that in the industrial years of the Company, Wei was as an influential both as a leader and mentor to his employees. As an acclaimed leader in the position of a project director, the leader is renowned for his abilities to communicate compelling visions of new project developments and guiding staff in achieving the initiated project goals.
Adaptive Vision
Driven by the passion to be innovative and constantly exceed the status quo, Chai Wei has always worked to translate the founding objectives of the Company by contributing to Huawei’s intentions of becoming a leader in the telecommunication industry. Given his unquenchable desire to pursue the organization’s vision, Wei has continuously demonstrated his capability to draw strategies which can enable him to adapt his leadership approaches to the challenges which research and development teams face a...
