The Concept of Culture, Motivation and the Project Manager
According to Clayton (2015), organizational culture refers to any underlying beliefs, values, assumptions, and ways of interacting that contribute to the unique psychological and social environment of an organization. Therefore, organizational culture includes firm expectations, philosophy, experiences, as well as the values that assist in guiding members' behaviors, which are shown through members' self-image, interactions with the outside world, inner workings, and future expectations (Meng & Boyd 2017, p.17). Besides, Clayton argued that culture within the organization is often based on shared beliefs, attitudes, written and unwritten rules, and customs that have been created over some time and which are always considered valid. In addition, Clayton argued that culture involves the organization’s values, norms, visions, symbols, assumptions, systems, language, habits, and beliefs. In simple words, culture can be defined as “the way things are done around or within an organization.”
Role of the Project Manager
In any business around the world, the traditional role of a project manager is to successfully initiate, plan, design, execute, monitor, control, and close a project. Therefore, a project manager must possess several skills that include the ability to detect problems, manage employees, resolve conflicts, and recognize project risks (Anantatmula 2010, p.13). However, according to Clayton (2015), one of the main functions of a project manager is to promote organizational culture, which is crucial to organizations' development.
