Mcdonald's Practice on Sustainability Packaging and Plastic Schemes and Recommendations
McDonald's has made significant efforts and commitments towards supply chain sustainability, especially in packaging and plastic waste management. The corporation's packing, waste, and toys strategies aim to keep the environment clean, preserve the planet, and support the organization's values and commitments. To this end, the company has continued to evolve its packaging, including producing products that require little or no packaging, using easily recyclable materials, and opening more opportunities for recycling.
One of the goals of the corporation's commitment is to make its packaging materials 100% recyclable, renewable, and certified by the year 2025. This pledge is on course because, as of the end of 2023, the company had achieved 86.7%. (Mcdonalds Corporate, 2024). These achievements have been contributed to by several initiatives, including the reduction of virgin fuel-based plastic use by 63.7%, increased opportunities for guests to recycle or dispose of packaging materials in more than 88.3% of its restaurants, and the stoppage of the use of plastic straws with the adoption of strawless lids (Mcdonalds Corporate, 2024). Despite these commitments and achievements, the company can do more to ensure the sustainability of packaging and waste management.
MacDonald's can do more to increase sustainability by educating consumers to help them understand the impact of plastics and other non-recyclable packaging materials on the environment. This awareness, coupled with the introduction of reusable packages and opportunities for recycling, will help consumers make informed choices (White et al., 2019). Consumers will be more willing to choose brands that use alternative materials and take advantage of opportunities to return packages or safely dispose of them. For entry-level marketer practitioners, campaigning for eco-friendly packaging such as paper ensures less plastic in the environment while designing products requiring less or no packaging, boosting sustainable efforts (Gupta, 2024). Sustainability can only be successful if it starts from the beginning; entry-level marketers should work with suppliers and other stakeholders to ensure packaging and waste sustainability throughout the supply chain.
