Introduction
Pepsi Company is one of the leading manufacturing company in the United States with it products being consumed all over the world. Environmental sustainability is the ratio, at which all biodegradable resources are harvested, non-biodegradable resources are depleted and the amount of pollution created that can be continued indefinitely (International Monetary Fund, 2009.p 1). In case the three resources are not extended indefinitely then we term the situation as non-sustainable. PepsiCo being a major processing plant in U S it has to play a major role in maintaining environmental standards by making sure that it complies with all environmental policies set by the government (Boje, 2015, p3). According to the Chief Executive Officer, they play a significant role in maintaining the environment by the help of all stakeholders in environmental management aspects including waste management (Ballou, Heitger and Landes, 2007, pg 17). Also, PepsiCo has proved to control all of its products with respect to the social performance standards required by laws of the US for its citizens. This makes social sustainability be defined as the methods applied to approach sustainable development (Ballou, Heitger and Landes, 2007, pg 7).
Aspects of social and environmental performance
Pepsi company has some social issues that are given the priority in it development agendas. From both the GRI report and the sustainability report 2013, the company stresses much on the performance of the whole company (International Monetary Fund, 2009.p 2-4). The company is targeting on improving it financial performance by incorporating superior long-term capital performance and also by sustaining the value of all of its shareholders. Secondly, the company on it bid to improve it social performance it focusing much on human sustainability by continuous reefing of its products (food and beverage) choices to meet the rising consumer needs, this is commonly achieved by reducing the amount of sodium, saturated fats, added sugar and broadening its portfolio off all choices of its individual products. Human sustainability in the company is done by providing clear guidelines for it manufacture and all the nutrients present, and making sure it line with the global policies and standards (Boje, 2015, p5). Finally, in social sustainability, we have talent sustainability which is used to create a healthy, inclusive, save and diverse workplaces which combine global communities and without ignoring the significance of respecting human rights in the supply chain and also in workplaces (Ballou, Heitger and Landes, 2007, pg 21).With a processing company there is much to be dealt with concerning the environment and in PepsiCo we have different aspects that we deal with so as to meet the environmental policies of licensing and continue in the line of production. In a bid to sustain the environment the company helps in conserving and protecting global water supplies in places where water is a problem by providing safe water to drink. Also, it helps in eliminating solid waste from production facilities to the decomposing zone or landfills. It also helps in innovating packaging system to make it more sustainable, leading to a reduction in environmental impacts. Environmental sustainability also comprises of mechanisms of removing the effects of greenhouse effects by reducing realize of greenhouse gasses. Finally, it also provides support to sustainable agriculture by promoting both growers and suppliers with the best or modern practices.
Stakeholders perceived by PepsiCo to its Social and environmental performance
A stakeholder is an organization, group or individual, who as the capability of affecting, or can be changed or identify it to be affected by an outcome, activity or decision of a project (Boje, 2015, p8). In the company, we have different stakeholders who help in the total operation of the business and any case both positive and negative performance of the company can produce huge impacts in their lives (International Monetary Fund, 2009.p 14). The principal shareholders of Pepsi company are communities, suppliers, consumers, employees, customers, and investors. In this list of PepsiCo list of shareholders we have some who the company feels it mandatory to work closely with as refilled in the GRI reports in which the chief executive officer outlines the significance of each and every stakeholder. One of the most perceived stakeholders are the consumers who are believed they are the most important in any production line. Consumers are the one responsible for consuming all the products produced and if their grievances are not well catered for they can result to closer of the company (Ballou, Heitger and Landes, 2007, pg 25). Also, customers play the same role as the consumers although not all customers are consumers but all consumers are customers.
