Abortion Debate in Poland
Introduction
Abortion legalization is an issue that has been debated for years in many countries. Some countries have ended up legalizing it, suggesting that it is the right of a woman to decide whether to keep the fetus or to abort it. Others have prohibited the Act arguing that it is against human rights since the fetus is an unborn human, and those who get caught doing abortion face punishment for going against the law. An excellent example of such a country that holds the view that abortion is inhuman is Poland. Nevertheless, abortion still gets conducted in private clinics regardless of its prohibition. The purpose of this paper is to address the factors that influence abortion debates in Poland.
Liberalization of abortion (1956)
The very first debate on the legalization of abortion was held from 1929 to 1932. This was before the second world war and during the reformation of the criminal code. The criminal code stated that it was to legalize abortion if it's a way of saving the mother's life and if the pregnancy is a product of crime (Korolczuk, 2016). Some individuals argued that the conditions should include the parent's social-economic background, but the draft was rejected. The 1932 law remained at work until 1956 when the liberal abortion law was adopted regardless of the Catholic churches (Szelewa, 2016). The realization was based on reverencing the unsafe underground abortions. Irrespective of the law against abortion, people still conducted it in secret. It used to put them at a high risk of death. However, the liberal abortion law did not consider the women's right to abortion despite their realization of the same. Women were not allowed to have abort without consulting two doctors who acted as a significant barrier to the abortion. The same went on until 1959, when the ministry of health introduced special regulations by realizing abortion on request, which went on until the 1990s.
