Defining Entrepreneurship
While a pervasive term in literature discourse, especially those oriented to business, most persons perceive entrepreneurship through simplistic definitions. Entrepreneurship is abroad context, as reflected by its various scholarly definitions. While some scholars define at through the contextual lens of a discipline, others perceive it as practice. Yet, even within these perceptions, the lexical discourse is intricate. Some discourses perceive entrepreneurship as the behavioural entities or persons behavioral characteristics or traits that enable facilitate business development, Others deem it as the practice of identifying and utilizing opportunities or needs gap in business development, and for some, entrepreneurship is either the decision-making process or the creation of new ventures. However, all these discourses orient towards a consensus that entrepreneurship involves opportunity, decision-making, and creation. Thus, despite the sharp debate in defining the subject, entrepreneurship is the exploitation of market opportunities.
Definition Discourses
Croci (2016) opines that entrepreneurship is a discipline, distinct in its own right. In their argument Croci opines that entrepreneurship is an autonomous concept that operates independently as well as interdisciplinary. However, other scholars posit that entrepreneurship is a practice, beginning with action and creating an organization (Barot, 2015, 163). In Barot’s view entrepreneurship is essential to success and each individual creating a business entity enters into its paradigm. Notwithstanding, it is an activity that shifts old practices into new behaviors with full discipline and independence (Diandra &Azmy, 2020, 236). In a different perspective Chang et al. (2015) define entrepreneurship as an art. In the author’s argument, art entrepreneurship is relatively a new research concept and the focal point explore entrepreneurships management processes including, capacity for adaptability, creativity and autonomy, creating artistic, economic, and social value.
Contextually, there are several definitions of entrepreneurship, some of which perceive it as a process of successful organization – others define it as building skills and mindset. However, Barot (2015, 164) and Hessels (2019, 395) argue that entrepreneurship’s definitive definition context is generating job opportunities and realizing economic development. Additionally, entrepreneurship must embed human resources with managerial talents and technical skill. From the lexical discourses, Hessels (2019, 398), posits that entrepreneurship’s definition converge within a point – that it is an intersection to development economic. Hessel develops a theoretical framework presenting entrepreneurship as a function of entrepreneurial ability, including skills, management, knowledge, and economic development which encapsulates opportunity, process, and learning. Based on the theoretical model, (Diandra &Azmy, 2020, 238) argues that it is conclusive that entrepreneurship is closely related to recognizing opportunity, emphasizing that skill and knowledge remain fundamental entrepreneurial abilities.
