Difference between analogy argument with other arguments
Argument by analogy refers to an argument where the basis for inference of yet unobserved similarities comes from some perceived similarities, for example between two situations (Weinreb, 2016, p. 56). While arguing by analogy, one argues for what is similar. This compares, for example with an argument by definition, whereby one categorizes items according to their definition.
The development of the analogy of Iraq as a reconstruction effort
The analogy reconstruction of Iraq begins with the homogenization of the Iraq population as a singular entity under oppression by Saddam Hussein, with the people universally oppressed by the Hussein regime (Sovacool and Halfon, 2007, p. 12). Former US president Georg W. Bush paints the picture of a completely helpless Iraq, overrun with lawlessness and terrorism. The effort’s machinations unfavorably compare Iraq with the western world, using the western developed scales of development (Sovacool and Halfon, 2007, p. 20). The Reconstructionist adherents then feed the world an image of an Iraq desperately in need of “Western development”. This creates grounds for re-labeling the military invasion of Iraq as a humanitarian liberation effort. For instance, President Bush declaring that the war effort is necessary to ‘protect Iraq natural resources from sabotage.
