Encouraging a diversity of roles in Marine RE Co
Marine RE Co. as an accredited and approved company to serve in United Kingdom, is majorly focused on harnessing the renewable energy of the ocean and use it to generate electricity that can be used to power homes, transport & communication, as well as, the manufacturing industry) (Pelc & Fujita 2002). The company works closely with other to convert renewable marine energy into electricity that can be used by the human population to provide various kinds of support (Hansen 2000). Among its major activities are planning and designing capacity for generation of electricity. This entails that their staffs majorly involve technical specialists and researcher in marine energy. Such condition inculcate experience in one line and enhances functional grouping in the organization. The top management clearly highlights the roles and responsibilities of each staff and adopt divisional structure since the activities are highly profiled, risky and the operating environment is uncertain and complex. Divisional organizational structure enable companies to specialize its activities into self-reliant divisions each capable of satisfying demands and changes within the business environment. (Businessmate.org, 2017)
The key considerations of marine companies are;
* Technical expertise of the workforce.
* Investment in the latest and world leading facilities such as Wave Hub
Wave hub
* Ideal location of the firm
It is important to note that the company provides investors and developers with the chance to test and develop full-grade grid-connected devices in the unrivaled waves and tidal conditions of UKCS (Pingree & Griffiths 1978). The company currently has 100 employees with three facilities located in the UKCS region. This is a report that addresses the issues suggested that the company’s staff should be encouraged to embrace the diversity of roles which will help the company realize efficiency in its operation.
019958050 The marine staff are resistant to change hence they are not ready to relinquish the old system of allocating functions. The system encourages laziness and lack of accountability. This can easily affect the maximum implementation of the project management triangle. This requires the project managers to initiate the change by introducing work analysis schedule where each and every employee is required to record the work done during the whole day hence this reduces laziness and improve the reality of implementing the triangle constraint.
Functional Specialist, Conflict, and Leadership Style
Technical specialist and expertise are among the major factors that are threatening the performance of Marine RE Co. It is therefore important to note that technical specialism encourages members of the staff to become specialists in only one disciple or one area (Pelc & Fujita 2002) such as finance, information technology, engineering, marketing, or human resource. With this, members of the staff can either manage one particular department or facilitate a critical role in the department they have specialized in. It has its disadvantages as it encourages employees to focus on the fulfillment of a single primary function. However, the demands and requirements of a company are diverse in nature, for example, a member of the stuff that has marketing skills has the potential of overseeing any relevant research, promotions, advertising, distributions and sales of services relating to Marine RE Co. However, due to functional specialism, employees can decide to focus on one of the above-listed tasks.
Gathering and managing knowledge is critical to Marine RE co. Employees can improve their expertise and specialism through learning and development programs. This can be enhanced through increased research and projects while at the same time taking advantage of the latest development and make contacts with key players in the field. The organization can also enhance learning by benchmarking and conferencing with well-established and equipped organizations. They will gain experience in use of leading facilities such as the COAST Lab test tanks and the Falcon Spirit research vessel as part development programme and your research. horizontal and vertical integration as well as two-way communication will enhance learning and development within the organization. Marine RE Co. adopts deuterolearning which is immensely complicated flow that closely emulates a parallel circuit board more than anything else. Basically, in deuteroloearning, there is a non-linear flow between two polar components, discipline focus and professional community.
Learning in many organization is affected by various factors as stipulated in the diagram below;
It is true to state that a technical specialist may not know how to handle all the above-listed tasks efficiently; however, the staff member has enough knowledge to effectively manage others to do the tasks which are not the case in Marine RE Co. It is important to note that there exist types of conflict because the company’s staff has adhered to only one primary function. The two that have been identified in this particular report are the intragroup conflict and the intergroup conflict. The intergroup conflict exists because currently, the company is experiencing a horizontal strain due to the competition that exists between the different functions of the enterprise (Ayoko, Callan, & Härtel 2003). This type of game can kill the company's performance as every employee expresses his full loyalty to his specialized functions instead of cooperating and working together with the others to realize the full growth of the company. This can only be mitigated through the implementation of the modern working culture where workers embrace a diversity of skills in the job place. The intragroup conflict also creates competition between the different functions of the company. For example, each and every employee working to please the manager while harming the other employee to increase the chances of earning a promotion (Folger & Stutman 1996).
In this particular case, two leadership styles should be adopted, and these include supportive leadership style and the transformational leadership style. The transformational leadership style is meant to encourage the members of staff to embrace the new changes which require them to discard unique roles and adopt the diversity of characters. The transformational leader ought to lead through vision and clear communication of your vision to the employees (Bass & Riggio 2006). The supportive leadership style, on the other hand, is meant to help in negotiations during the conflict (Lok & Crawford 2004). Through this leadership style, manager is expected to show concern and listen to both sides to enable him to make wise judgment that is satisfactory to both parties
Conclusion
In conclusion, being one of the most renowned companies in the Marine renewable energy industry, it is important that the company does away with functional specialism that is currently acting as an impediment to achieving the company’s future goals (Gerke, Dickson, Desbordes & Gates 2017). Members of staff should be encouraged to take up the diversity in roles, unity of focus and reduce the competition that results from the intragroup and intergroup conflicts within the company
