Introduction
Globalization and cross border management are new business trends that are driving many organizations. This is based on the need to expand business operations and achieve competitiveness in the ever-changing market economy. Business organizations are expanding their business operations to ensure that they can reap the benefits of globalization and managing cross border strategies (Eisenberger, Fasolo, & Davis-LaMastro, 2009, P.53). The demand for international operations have been the latest trends that shape every business operation in the world. Many organizations are scrambling for global opportunities that exist in the world. This has led many organizational to be termed multinational corporations due to operating across different borders. This has been necessitated with increased changes in technology and country partnerships that have led to interconnectedness of the world. Leading regional bodies like NATO, EU, ECOWAS, and WTO have necessitated countries with in particular regions to develop their own policies that can be used to guide the operations that they have in this countries. Further, Wentland (2003, P. 48) adds that the rise of diplomatic relations between countries has led to improved relationships between countries where countries can make business relationships better through their diplomatic relations. Many countries have established diplomatic relations in different countries as way of improving business relations with them. This allows interested business from such countries to easily enter into such countries and establish business operations or alliances. At the organizational level, organizations have started implementing expatriate strategies as a way of using their existing staff to start new business operations in new territories.
Millennium connections understands the benefits of global business operations. The organization is slowly increasing its business operations to tap the readily available global market in the nearest country of China. Expanding business opportunities in China will entail moving a management employee to oversee business operations within the country and recruit local employees who will work in lower levels positions. This is keeping the culture and spirit of the business even as operations are moved from Australia to China. The business environment may be different but the strategies used are the same and thus the need to send a manager who will oversee all the required business operations (Heilmann, 2017, P. 11). China offers a greater opportunity for business since it is a country with a bigger population and a young generation that is keen on technological innovations. This The expatriate position is intended to open up new business opportunities for Millennium connections and also opportunities to explore markets in the other four countries that have been flagged as expansion hubs. Employees who will be recruited on such mission will enjoy a larger business environment that they can manage and expand as compared to the home country. Although this is a challenge, but it is worthy taking it since it presents the individual with an opportunity to grow and nurture their abilities.
Background of China
China famously known as the people’s republic of China is a unitary sovereign state and the world’s most populated country. Since the country emerged as one of the earliest civilizations in the past, it is one of the economic hubs of the Asian region that have created business opportunities for many European countries (Jalil & Feridun, 2011, P. 209). Australia enjoys one of the best business relations with China which opens greater room for any opportunity for millennium networks to exploit. The country’s population is growing very fast due economic reforms that were introduced in 1978 (Liu, 2009, P. 17). This therefore makes the country one of the second largest economies in the world based on nominal GDP. It has better business opportunities that can be tapped by any organization that seeks to enter such a country since it has a large population that offers a wider market for products since organizations can reap the economic benefits that relate to such market opportunities.
The country is a leader of science and technology both historically and today. The country’s population enjoys high investments in scientific research from the government since this is held as the country’s pride. This has led to the need to develop the education system with emphasis on science, mathematics and engineering. The infrastructure in the country is the best with the largest number of active cellphones in the world (Hutchings, 2003, P. 459). This also opens opportunities for easy business since it has the largest number of internet and broadband users with an estimated population of over 688 million users. On the other hand, the country as the best transport networks with both rail and road being commonly utilized within the country. This makes it easy for people to operate or carry out their businesses within the country. The country offers the best environment for individuals with a younger family since there are around 16% of the population who are below fourteen years while 70% of population fall between 114-59. This population gives the best environment for a growing family since the family can share services with neighboring families thus cutting costs (Zhao, 2000, P. 43). This is especially important for the expatriates who wish to work and relocate in China.
Chinese Culture
The Chinese culture has a lot of substantive content with different varieties that has been related to the elephant before the blind men in history. The Chinese population has been described as conservative and this is one of the reasons why they have been described as being resistant to modern civilizations. The culture of these people exists in the family system which forms the main substance of the Chinese society (GuanshengMa, 2015, P. 196). They have a naturalistic view of life that is traced back to the agricultural society that has shaped the economy of the country. This entails the belief in things like rather using a vehicle since they believe that walking is the most natural way of life. Another example is the fact that they do not believe in things that change the natural way of life like sleeping pills which are popular since they believe that sleeping or life patterns should not be artificially induced but rather left to naturally prevail. According to (Mente, 2000, P. 33) the Chinese base their life on the belief that human beings are endowed naturally by nature and thus this means that the naturalistic way of life is the only way to happiness. In the story of the farmer Confucius teaches the Chinese people to follow the natural way of life and let it be as it is since the principle of natural life is what guides these population. Therefore, expatriates need to understand the population that they are working and the cultural ways that guide the way these people view life. This allows the expatriate to learn and quickly adopt the culture.
According to Luo, Huang, & Wang (2011, P. 142) business activities in China revolve around “Guanxi” or relationships which revolve around building networks for both personal and business purposes. This makes the Chinese people to be seen as brokers by the outside world especially the western world. There is need for the expatriate to take time to learn the Chinese culture and business practices. This is because ‘Guanxi emphasizes the need to develop deeper relationships and understanding of the people you work with. Relationships form the key to any business activities and networks that take place in the country.
The Chinese work culture recognizes the need to use their language in business communication and engagements. This means that the expatriate will have to learn basic Chinese language as a way of easy interaction with the population. Since the population is keen on their language, the people of the country are keen on statements that can be strong or hold deep meanings (GuanshengMa, 2015, P. 195). The employees have been trained and enjoy following the Confucius style of management that recognizes the role of the manager in running all business operations. Under Confucius the manager makes the decision and passes them down to fellow employees to implement them. This mean that the operations manager will have a greater responsibility of making business decisions when at work. As compared to the western approach, the Chinese people do not always question their seniors since they believe they hold enough wisdom and knowledge to make decisions on their behalf. This management style is efficient thus the reasons why China has excelled in several areas of life. However, this exposes the manager to greater management roles that will require close supervision at all times.
