The Importance of Veterans in the Modern World
The obsessive urge to conquer and dominate territory within humanity makes war inevitable. Açıksöz (2012, p.18), brings forth the notion that veterans are the backbone and the foundation upon which the sovereignty of any nation lies. The dream of liberty and freedom that civilians enjoy are all in totality a direct consequence of prior rendered services by both deceased and redundant members of the armed forces. A huge portion of a nation's history is curved out and engraved on books of history by former military personnel through their heroic deeds and accomplishments. Today, veterans are significantly influencing the drafting and formulation of their nation's military, foreign policies while at the same time catalyzing their country's democratization process (Gelpi and Feaver, 2002, p.781).
In the event of unforeseen eventualities where a catastrophe dawns on a nation, veterans without fail, respond promptly to various distress calls making use of their expertise and military training in disaster management to render humanitarian support through medical aid and food rations to civilians (Gaydos and Luz, 1994, p.54).
