The Importance of Veterans in the Modern World
The obsessive urge to conquer and dominate territory within humanity makes war inevitable. Açıksöz (2012, p.18), brings forth the notion that veterans are the backbone and the foundation upon which the sovereignty of any nation lies. The dream of liberty and freedom that civilians enjoy are all in totality a direct consequence of prior rendered services by both deceased and redundant members of the armed forces. A huge portion of a nation’s history is curved out and engraved on books of history by former military personnel through their heroic deeds and accomplishments. Today, veterans are significantly influencing the drafting and formulation of their nation’s military, foreign policies while at the same time catalyzing their country’s democratization process (Gelpi and Feaver, 2002, p.781).
In the event of unforeseen eventualities where a catastrophe dawns on a nation, veterans without fail, respond promptly to various distress calls making use of their expertise and military training in disaster management to render humanitarian support through medical aid and food rations to civilians (Gaydos and Luz, 1994, p.54). The outbreak of the lethal Ebola virus in West Africa in two thousand and fourteen saw intensified collaboration among health practitioners from the world health organization and both retired and active members of the armed forces from across the globe. The urgency to curb and contain the spread of the deadly virus was paramount and as a consequence a top priority. These veterans voluntarily offered their services putting their lives in jeopardy in their quest to establish and man the numerous make-shift quarantine clinics.
Wesch-Klein (2007, p.446), explains that the continuum of a nation's legacy is dependent on the veterans sheer will to pass on to recruits, their technical know-how in respect of the protection of the values upon which a country was founded thus upholding the sanctity and honor of the country. It is through the exemplary examples set by veterans that millennial military recruits are challenged and encouraged to exhibit and exude the same bravery, patriotism, and servitude demonstrated by their predecessors. The numerous physical scars such as the subsequent loss of limbs and psychological wounds such as post-traumatic stress disorders that most veterans bear are symbolic memorabilia and constant reminders of the actual demerits of conflict and war hence the necessity for peace (Keane, Zimering and Caddell, 1985, p.10).
