Reflective Commentary: Professional Development By (Student's Name) Course Name Professor's Name Institutional Affiliation City Date Reflective Commentary: Professional Development Introduction The social work profession is founded on respect for all people's inherent worth, welfare, and dignity irrespective of their ethnic, cultural, or religious background as stipulated in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNUDHR) in 1948 ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"ISSN":"1870-4654","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"UN","given":"","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"Anuario Mexicano De Derecho Internacional","id":"ITEM-1","issue":"June 2001","issued":{"date-parts":[["2016"]]},"page":"573-581","title":"HUMAN RIGHTS: A Basic Handbook for UN Staff","type":"article-journal","volume":"16"},"uris":["http://www.mendeley.com/documents/?uuid=f58f9999-2ef9-40ab-9795-d919145cf8ba"]}],"mendeley":{"formattedCitation":"(UN, 2016)","plainTextFormattedCitation":"(UN, 2016)","previouslyFormattedCitation":"(UN, 2016)"},"properties":{"noteIndex":0},"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"}(UN, 2016). Thus, social work professionals are obligated to essentially work toward promoting individuals', groups', and societies' best interests regarding specific professional standards and capabilities frameworks. This essay is a critical analysis and reflective commentary of my practice and professional development. It will provide an account of my work practice working with foreign individuals seeking asylum in the United Kingdom (UK). It will further assess my social work practices to demonstrate my work performance regarding the professional capabilities framework and Social Work England (SWE) professional standards, supported by social work theories evidence-based research. The domains considered in this paper include Intervention and Skills, and Rights, Justice, & Economic well-being. Intervention and Skills As social workers, I should involve individuals, families, and communities to work alongside people to identify immediate challenges, needs, and appropriate intervention approaches. It is essential to establish a productive working relationship, efficient and effective information exchange. Following the professional judgment, healthcare personnel should employ intervention strategies, promote self-determination, protect and support positive changes. Moreover, professional social workers should ensure the development and maintenance of skills relevant to their there roles. Following communication barriers, we used Google translate to enhance communication between asylum seekers and providers. However, Google translate is, in part, inaccurate and result in misinformation and subsequent errors. Thus, to demonstrate and promote effective long-term communication, I developed programs to encourage the victims to enroll in English classes as a contingency planning to anticipate complexity human diversity regarding direct and dynamic nature. Enhancing communication can be underpinned by the uncertainty reduction theory. The theory suggests that strangers' primary goals upon meeting are to minimize levels of uncertainty, including behavioural confusion and our perception of others. The strangers must enhance their communication strategies to ensure that the right message is precisely conveyed to achieve these. A significant part of my work responsibilities is to help asylum seekers wishing to remain in the UK apply for housing upon attaining 18 years and subsequently apply for universal credit and travelling documents, among other benefits, upon approval of their rights to remain in the UK. I effectively fulfill this obligation to support and promote these individuals' independence and economic progress through my experience, knowledge, and skills ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"British Association of Social Workers","given":"","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"id":"ITEM-1","issue":"June","issued":{"date-parts":[["2018"]]},"page":"1-13","title":"Professional Capabilities Framework for Social Work in England","type":"article-journal"},"uris":["http://www.mendeley.com/documents/?uuid=c1bfe235-a3c9-4378-a9b1-5749e876babd"]}],"mendeley":{"formattedCitation":"(British Association of Social Workers, 2018)","plainTextFormattedCitation":"(British Association of Social Workers, 2018)","previouslyFormattedCitation":"(British Association of Social Workers, 2018)"},"properties":{"noteIndex":0},"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"}(BASW, 2018). My experience and knowledge in refugee housing and documentation allow the engagement of necessary public officers, implement risk mitigation measures, and advise asylum seekers on the UK's matters to promote safety. Nevertheless, the major objective of providing housing, universal credit, and travelling documents includes enhancing their well-being by promoting human rights like proper housing, food, and others. As incorporated in the models and theories of geopolitics, the development theory accentuates that "social investment," including providing material and social support to vulnerable populations, enhances their well-being and development ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"ISBN":"1465-3885","ISSN":"0265-0533","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Gray","given":"Mel","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"Introduction to Social work","id":"ITEM-1","issued":{"date-parts":[["2010"]]},"page":"75-98","title":"Theories of social work practice","type":"article-journal"},"uris":["http://www.mendeley.com/documents/?uuid=36ef1183-3be0-451b-9383-0efadd9fb8e9"]}],"mendeley":{"formattedCitation":"(Gray, 2010)","plainTextFormattedCitation":"(Gray, 2010)","previouslyFormattedCitation":"(Gray, 2010)"},"properties":{"noteIndex":0},"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"}(Gray, 2010). Besides, the basic needs model of development theory reports that a country or community can only achieve internal growth if its citizens' basic needs are met (Adie et al., 2008). Thus, providing basic needs catapults the individual above the poverty level, allowing them to pursue other goals to enhance personal development. Enhancing the employees' communication skills and settlement enhances their interaction and relationship with others. Like the social model of development theory, the social work humanism theory argues that supporting people in their development can improve relationships, society, and individuals' objectives ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"DOI":"10.1080/17496535.2013.769341","ISBN":"9781933478302","ISSN":"1749-6535","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Floyd","given":"Melissa","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"Ethics and Social Welfare","id":"ITEM-1","issue":"1","issued":{"date-parts":[["2013"]]},"page":"103-104","title":"Humanistic Social Work: Core Principles in Practice","type":"article-journal","volume":"7"},"uris":["http://www.mendeley.com/documents/?uuid=1ff9700a-7e8e-4478-bd80-d4c18b53edd6"]}],"mendeley":{"formattedCitation":"(Floyd, 2013)","plainTextFormattedCitation":"(Floyd, 2013)","previouslyFormattedCitation":"(Floyd, 2013)"},"properties":{"noteIndex":0},"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"}(Floyd, 2013). The humanism theory further states that such models promote the exploration of personal identity, the pursuit of positive social ties, and the flexibility in navigating one's self and finding purpose in the larger world ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"DOI":"10.1080/17496535.2013.769341","ISBN":"9781933478302","ISSN":"1749-6535","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Floyd","given":"Melissa","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"Ethics and Social Welfare","id":"ITEM-1","issue":"1","issued":{"date-parts":[["2013"]]},"page":"103-104","title":"Humanistic Social Work: Core Principles in Practice","type":"article-journal","volume":"7"},"uris":["http://www.mendeley.com/documents/?uuid=1ff9700a-7e8e-4478-bd80-d4c18b53edd6"]}],"mendeley":{"formattedCitation":"(Floyd, 2013)","plainTextFormattedCitation":"(Floyd, 2013)","previouslyFormattedCitation":"(Floyd, 2013)"},"properties":{"noteIndex":0},"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"}(Floyd, 2013). Thus, social investments help each asylum seeker to advance as to their respective stage of development.
