Globalization and Environment
Globalization refers to how local or national things are done globally, i.e., they are done together worldwide. In short, globalization explains how people of the world integrate and interact (Jackson et al, 1014). Globalization involves trade, technology, trade, politics and culture among other aspects. Many people have varied perspectives on the consequences of this practice. In this discussion, one considers both the negative and positive impacts of globalization and environment. Further one compares and contrasts these effects in Japan and China which represent developed and developing countries respectively.
First, globalization has resulted to an exploitation of natural resources as competition between countries heightens to meet global demands. With the vast opportunities for exportation, countries embark on maximizing production with the resources they have. In so doing, natural resources are overused. A good instance is overfishing and deforestation. For example, China’s consumption of nickel increased by 21% in 2001, 13% in 2002 and 10% in 2003.China’s need for aluminum materials also doubled in 2003.On the other hand, Japan was on record that it lost $20 million because of metal theft aimed to export the contents for monetary gains. The two countries, therefore, faced similar challenges which they attributed to globalization. Overexploitation of a country’s natural resource is lethal for a nation’s future generations.
Moreover, globalization has increased levels of pollution (Newell and Peter, 111). The composition effect explains this idea in details. The removal of these tariffs between countries may have either positive or negative impact because it affects the industrial composition. When there is an increase in the manufacturing sector, then an increased level of pollution is witnessed. Consider a case where China where all forms of destructions are evident. In 2011, China had 2.3 million tons of electronic waste at their disposal. From a recent research, it is only 1% of the city dwellers in China breathe clean air according to the European Union. This air pollution and electronic waste are associated closely with globalization in the country. On the contrary, Japan experiences 3.4 million of pounds emissions of organic waste into the water each day which is a lower value compared to China’s 11.7 million of pounds. The duo suffers the same problem, but it is more adverse in China.
Furthermore, there is reduced environmental standards because of globalization. In areas with less regulatory oversight, dirty industries and practices will thrive by exploiting the available resources for monetary gains and this results in severe damage to the environment. Circumstances, where authorities fail to oversee the performance of industries and regulate them, are rampant in the society. Consequently, the atmosphere becomes the subject of destruction. For instance, in China, it is estimated that premature deaths will have risen from 380,000 in 2010 to 550,000 by 2020.Such a high number of fatalities is a contribution to the uncontrolled industries operating in the country. Japan, on the other hand, has tried to improve its air quality. The number of deaths related to air pollution from uncontrolled industries in Japan is not significant, but the two countries are experiencing the same fate.
