Theme of Self-Efficacy in the Lynn University Dialogue Book
For each individual and society, there are profound questions that seek to look at the need to know self and their surroundings. The need and desire to ‘know thyself’, according to Socrates forms the root to all wisdom, knowledge and virtue. To acquire self-knowledge and self-awareness requires knowledge, skills and multiple perspectives that are expressed in various learning outcomes. The Lynn University Dialogue Book in the Self and society covers various themes that include the theme of resilience, self-efficacy, socialized roles, social construction of gender, power and leadership. However, the major theme covered in the Lynn University Dialogue Book is self-efficacy.
The book comprises of various perspectives that are handled in the book. This includes titles such , ‘Everything I Know About Myself, I Learned from Dr. Seuss Adelson’, , ‘where do i belong: The emerging self’ by Adelson and All Alone is all we are by Seifer. It also includes perspectives such as ‘Me, Myself and I on nature Vs. Nurture’, by Levension and Where the Wild thing are’ presented by Ainbinder. These study topics all look to cover the theme of self-efficacy in detail.
The theme of self-efficacy aims at the students exploring the understanding of one’s self on a more personal journey. It is a journey that that begins with the memory of their first favorite story and culminates to the development of their personal narrative. The readings and other related materials are aimed at helping students indentify the impact of family roles and family relationships in the development of their personal identity. Self-efficacy looks at identity that will be manifested through expressing their personal narrative and on their ability to build on these stories (Goldstein & Adelson, 6).
In addition, self-efficacy looks at the exploration that exists between the understandings of our inner self from the first introduction stories in our childhood to the taking of different roles in our adulthood. The theme of self-efficacy has been widely covered in the book by relating it to the wild things story, by providing a story that revolves around fantasy and imagination in helping an individual deal with confusion, frustration and anger. Additional readings on this theme are included to supplement the theme through inclusion of various discussion topics. In addition, this theme looks at defining the society and the relation that exists to the personal growth and the insight of the individual (Lynn University, 134). This is done through the understanding and synthesis of the different existential literatures and music lyrics. This encourages students to identify, analyze and create answers to the questions on the meaning and purpose of life and society.
Socialized role is another theme widely covered in the dialogues of self and society, which is in contrast to the theme of self-efficacy. Just like self-efficacy, Socialized role forms one of the core learning objectives for the dialogues of self and society as it explores on the development of our identity and the influence of our environment (Goldstein & Adelson, 89). The influence usually arises from the parents, the society at large and other significant events that shape on an individual’s concept of self. In contrast to the theme of Self-efficacy, it seeks to answer questions on the role of nature Vs nurture and the specialized roles of people in the society or community. Another unique aspect is that it looks at the development of values and the different aspects of moral self of who a person yearns to be. However, unlike Self-efficacy; it also presents other themes such as the theme of resilience and social construction of gender. In contrast to the theme of Self-efficacy, its research topics are presented through books and other supplementary material; it is presented through films and discussion topics.
The theme also carefully examines different societies that exist and the people that live in them. It looks at various societies such as the Silver Screen ...
