Ethical issues in discrimination
The nature of ethics is correlated with reason, and can be defined by several features such as virtue, good right and freedom. The equality of all people should be the fundamental principle enshrined in the legal systems and moral frameworks of civilian societies. Discrimination usually occurs when equality is denied. Ubiquitous spread can lead to conflict and intolerance due to those who are discriminated against refuse to be treated that way. The application of ethics to discrimination helps anyone with a position in organization or society to treat everyone fairly without contemplation of perceived differences.
Three ethical theories can be applied in consideration of ethical decisions. The theories are metaethics, normative and applied ethics. Metaethics refers to the foundation, status and extent of moral values, words, and properties. Normative ethics involve getting at moral standards that govern right and wrong. Normative ethics follows the principle of ‘doing unto others what we want to be done unto us’CITATION Eli \l 1033 (Anscombe). Application of this rule will make it hard to victimize, harass, assault, and discrimination against others. Also, the third principle of ethics is applied ethics involves the analysis of controversial moral issues such as animal rights, abortion, or euthanasia. Applied ethical issues are subdivided into business ethics, medical ethics, and sexual ethics. Therefore, discrimination ethics applies to this principle of applied ethics since it is strictly a moral issue.
Managers of companies must recognize values in operations of the establishment. Supervisors who are unbiased makes decisions on employee issues regardless of any class difference. They are supposed not to favor any employee by their ethnicity or background.
In the contemporary world, there are equal rights for men and women, but still some people are still being discriminated against. Gender discrimination is an ethical issue which is impossible to ignore silently, and it constitutes a major form of employment discrimination. Also, it is considered by law as a form of injustice and is illegal in some countries. Gender discrimination in the workforce takes various forms such as unequal pay, job segregation, or lack of training. CITATION Shi11 \l 1033 (Chisholm). Sometimes men are victims of gender discrimination. An example would be administrative positions where it is hard for men to obtain because the title of a ‘secretary’ is of mostly female. Also, men pursuing caregiving oriented careers may be criticized and encounter societal resistance CITATION RAn97 \l 1033 (Anker).
Racial discrimination is still a crucial ethical issue in the world; especially in the United States, which tops the ethical matters that are dealt with. The biggest source of racial discrimination are the people who bear the responsibility of protecting the people from such problems. A good example is racially instigated police brutality. The effect of race discrimination is that it prevents a person from a job opportunity due to their background or color. The ethical reasoning principles in racial discrimination are people of minorities are under the Rights ethical principle because they are concerned with their rights in the workplace. Another principle is that employers would be under the principle of universalism because it is more of duty to them to keep racial discrimination out of the workplace. Also, the government would be under the Justice principle because they make the laws to prevent such issues as racial discrimination in the workplace CITATION Shi98 \l 1033 (Shih-Hsueh and Kleiner).
Age discrimination has been exacerbated by the low economy for many years. Although it is against the law to discriminate people based on age, is hard to prove. Employees in their 50s and 60s and are approaching retirement are being downsized due o reasons such as financial issues, technology adoption, or morale issues. Ethical issues in age discrimination can surface when older workers are eliminated or set aside in the employment relationship. From the ethical perspective, it is an unfair practice, lacking in empathy, and uncaring. The principle that should be applied here is the normative ethics where we should treat others the way we want to be treated.
Religious discrimination involves categorizing and treating a person unfavorably due to their religious beliefs. It can also take a form of addressing one because of being married to of in connection with a religious group. Forms of religious discrimination are harassment by use of offensive remarks, segregation, not accommodating dress or grooming of an individual based or religion, or holding on to religious views. Although the law protects all people in religious all religious organization, some people are still practicing. The ethical consideration in religious discrimination is mainly the harassment. Whether in schools, society or workplace, it is unethical to discriminate one on religious lines.
Sexual orientation discrimination entails treating individuals differently or harassed because of one’s perceived or real sexual orientation - whether gay, lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual. This type of discrimination sometimes is illegal in some workplaces, depending on where one works. Presently, no federal law outrightly outlaw sexual orientation discrimination in the private sector. Being a gay or a lesbian in some states such as the District of Columbia have prohibited sexual orientation discrimination. The ethical aspect of sexual affiliation prejudice includes stigmatization, segregation, and ridicule. Despite the fact that sexual orientation is still a controversial topic in all parts of the world, equal opportunity should be the most fundamental tenet. The rights of all forms of sexual orientation are as valid as those of women who encounter sexual preferences and harassment at work.
Discrimination against immigrants and ethnic minorities working places has brought much tension in various quotas such as cheap labor, income disparity, wages, and overpopulation that is as a result of immigrants.
