Southwest has decided to deal with its direct opponent United Airlines by increasing its ticket prices by 10% . This implies that the ticket prices of Southwest will be $76 compared to that of United Airlines which is $79. This lower price will attract more customers thus allowing them to focus on other factors such as route, flight and customer services which customers consider most important.
Southwest has the opportunity to majorly dwell in short-haul routes abandoned by major carriers which opted for long-haul routes between major cities following the passing of deregulation. Southwest will not only serve its stronghold in California but also other cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Burbank, Ontario, Las Vagas and Seatle. This will help it to retain its loyal customers and also build the new customer base. The company will obtain more profit and market share amounting to $0.0293 per available seat should it serve this new trips 10 times a day with a price of $48.46 and serve San Francisco to Seatle at $56.17 with the load factor of 62.78%.
