Video Analysis Sights, Sounds, Stories and Feelings Media Essay (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

study the piece-Lemonade (music and images by Beyonce Knowles, available for free here:) https://vimeo.com/260674272 -and tell me how the images relate to the tune, and how they combine to create meaning.
As you’re doing this, try to think of all of the things we’ve talked about in class: a.) Story structure b.) Lighting c.) Editing d.) Camera angles e.) Mise-en-scéne (costumes, sets, make up etc.)
Try to determine how these relate to the music/lyrics/story. You can either examine one song out of the collection as a self-contained expression, or tell me how and why the music/lyrics/images contribute to a running theme of the whole movie

13 Lemonade Film
13 lemonade, a film by Beyonce Knowles, is one that is created in a couple of episodes, all sifting through a collection of glitzy and hopelessly illusory dioramas, coming up with the meaning lemonade. The chapters of the film are symbolic and they touch on a couple of themes including black identity, marital infidelity, sisterhood, Christianity and reconciliation (Hempstead). In the film, Beyonce has also been able to put herself in a community, where each chapter starts with her speaking some poetic words, then she starts singing on some of the songs found in her lemonade album and throughout the film, a music-video language has been employed. However, the film also includes sights, sounds, stories, and feelings. This analysis, therefore, will include the story structure, lighting, editing, camera angles and the Mise-en-scéne of the film.
The story structure of the film is based on five chapters; intuition, denial, apathy, emptiness, and resurrection which have been connected by the poetic readings of Warsan Shire by Beyonce with the storyline tracing around infidelity and reconciliation. Later in the film, she wants out of an unfaithful relationship and the story of the film changes to a reunion (Hempstead). The part on the relationship, is on how she is treated as a black woman, a neglected person in America. Men have rarely been used in the film since in real life, they have been physically and emotionally absent. They have been replaced by women who are a sign of not only sisterhood but also solidarity.
