In the Chase of a Green Territory
No one can doubt that most countries making the Northern hemisphere of the American continent is marred with a culture completely different from the Central America, USA. Most countries in this part, like Jamaica, Mexico, El Salvador, among others have people with dire need for an education and life that can be attained in the United States. El Salvador for instance, has been fiercely contested, especially the isolated northern Morazán province, during the half decade of civil war.
The story of a 56-year-old Richard Chavira, a senior who hopes to attend M.I.T. in the fall, is one of the few fortunate stories. Being numbered among those who began tenth grade, seeing many dropped out due to the temptations of drugs and gang activities in the neighborhood, Richard attest a live full of hope and struggles.
Having come to the United States for studies, Richard underwent a life full of troubles. Having graduated in early 1980s, during the period when the gangs and dope were already invading their campus, and the black and Latino students were constantly raging fire using civil rights movements, Richard was one of the people who became accustomed to the new cultural flavor in the United States, especially in California, where has have ever lived.
