Racism
Racism is bias aimed at separating people of different races based on their characteristics and abilities in order to distinguish which one is superior or inferior. It is hatred directed at a group of people based solely on their skin color, country of origin and ethnicity. Racism can be expressed in different ways through beliefs, actions and even words (Dovidio 12). This often leads to discrimination against the inferior race who are usually the minority in a given place. From as late as the 20th century, the belief of there being a biological race has been accepted as an invention of culture with no scientific basis.
Racialism negatively affects the health on the receiving end of the discrimination. This includes both physical and mental health of an individual. They are also characterized with psychological distress. A victim of racism may be inclined to hazardous drinking as a means of dealing with the stress they are undergoing and also smoking.
