The Responsibilities of a Good Parent
Parents regularly play an essential role in the child`s upbringing. It is however not an easy task being a good parent. It can be a source of enormous pleasure over a lifetime although it is time-consuming and a challenging situation. Parents also face the challenge of developing the academic, emotional and social development of their children as well as gratifying their children's basic physical needs. All the same, all good parents in general have some common essential qualities that help their children develop into responsible adults (McConaughy 37). For one to be a good parent, therefore, has to meet certain requirements that are discussed further in the following paragraphs.
First, it is the responsibility of a good parent to be compassionate and affectionate. Where there is love, a well-built bond is created between the parent and the child. These are incomprehensible things, but only both the parent and the child feel it. The absolute adoration that a parent gives to his/her child is what makes him/her so unique and significant. An environment composed of love and care is very essential for a child`s growth. Research shows that children from happy family units have a brighter outlook on the world and usually live contented lives, while the opposite is true (Evans and David 152).
Children from unstable families/families where quarrels are often are more short-tempered and irritable. The surroundings easily shaped up a child`s character and so it is e responsibility of each parent to provide a loving environment to his/her child.
A good responsible parent needs to be a good role model for his/her child to look up to him or her. Children tend to learn several of their habits from their parents, and it is, therefore, the duty of a parent to choose what kind of patterns him/her wants his/her child to accede to. A parent should, for example, immediately quit a bad habit if he/she notices his/her child has a tendency to pick up that habit. In general, a good parent should conduct him/herself in a manner that sets good examples for the child (Muverengwi 155). A good parent is also responsible for spending time with his/her child. These however do not mean a parent resigning from his/her workplace and staying at home with the child all day. Instead, it is quality time that matters. A good parent needs to know his/her child well (Smithrim, Katharine and Rena 155).
Finally, a good parent should teach his/her child to function independently. The parent is responsible for equipping his/her child with relevant age suitable skills thereby allowing him/her to turn out to be more and more independent. There are times in life when the child requires learning how to relieve oneself emotionally; make up his/her bed every m...
