Much Photojournalism is not Art
Introduction
Danto argues in aesthetic theory that art can be differentiated using epistemology and ontology. Epistemology is the study on human acquisition of knowledge and how our minds relate to realism.
Danto a critic majored in numerous fields of art from classical artists like Socrates, Mapplethorpe to modern cultures. He contrasts between Imitation and Reality theory. According to him, imitation of nature was the only thing available and that was the original art. He portrays artist as competitors who ues different styles and creativity to distinct their art thus his philosophy. He concludes that there is no solitary style that can be considered the best of art. Danto argues that most photojournalism is distinct from art and that the defining standards of art have charged over the years. He goes further to conclude in his book, “What Art Is” that art has ended but continues to say that legitimacy of art will thus be defined or evaluated based upon the meaning of what the artist is trying to convey (Danto, 1-5).
