Socioeconomic status involves not only income but also financial security, educational achievement, and subjective perceptions of social class and social status. Socioeconomic status comprises of privileges and opportunities that individuals can afford within the community as well as the quality of people’s life attributes. Poverty, particularly, is not one factor but is described in form of multiple psychosocial and physical factors. It can also be described as a reliable and consistent predictor of a wide variety of outcomes of people’s lifespan, which also includes psychological and physical health. Social economic status is significant in all areas of advocacy, education, social and behavioral science, and research practice. Socioeconomic influence the entire human functioning that includes human mental and physical health. The low socioeconomic status that is characterized by poor health, poverty, and inadequate education affect the overall society. There is increasing inequities in quality of life, resource distribution, and health distribution globally. The foundations that focus on socioeconomic inequities and the nations such as the United States that work towards reducing the deep socioeconomic status gaps are very beneficial to the society. Researchers, social and behavioral experts are an important group in the society who can conduct various researchers to identify solutions to overcome the socioeconomic status challenge of disparities at both societal and individual levels.
Crime has consistently occurred over the human history in every society. The crime history can be traced back to humankind history when Cain, son of Adam and Eve when he killed his brother Abel due to Jealousy, committed the first crime. Crime is described as a vital source of discomfort and insecurity in all society. Crime leads to huge psychological and monetary costs in every society. The offense makes both the victims and other people in the society to fear and have the feel insecure. This makes individuals being victimized to panic and this affects their well-being negatively. Crime refers to the wrongdoing, which is classified by the law of land or parliament or state. Each nation sets out a number of crimes that are prohibited and also sets the type of punishment for anyone who commits such acts such as imprisonment, fine, or both.
The definition of crime varies from one region to another; therefore, there is no permanent or universal definition of the crime. A crime is defined as an omission or act committed by human and it is harmful to other people in the society, and the state is supposed to prevent it. Crime is associated with the social life from its initial beginning. Crime is an offense is constant I people’s life. The offense occurs in each society, and it occurs at every development stage, regardless of its historical period, system, and structure. The changes in crime structure and the offense itself are both influenced by various factors such as migrations, the progress of urbanization and industrialization, the degree of economic growth and development, social structure transformations in the society, social system and political structure in a particular country. Transformations can occur within a short period due to rapid changes in a given society; it can occur throughout a long-term period or can occur in a revolutionary manner. For example, Poland accomplished many breakthroughs through the history that resulted in many consequences, among which led to decline or rise of crime rates in the country. Each time Poland encountered any switchover, wars, recovery period, restoration period, the society developed new conditions to function properly and facilitated the development of varying social standards that required authorities of state protection. The transformations that occur in crime are connected naturally to common social change processes that are applicable in every society

For a society where the majority of unemployed individuals are young, the crime ends up being a sporty activity. The economic crime theory suggests that unemployment is a cost since it increases the crime rates in the society. The high rates of unemployment have the cost implication since the majority of the labor force is kept out of production and if this occurs consistently, the knowledge and skills of the labor force will drastically decrease. Crime is described as an ailment that attacks and affects the rights of people in a society. The crime incidences are key significant social and economic concerns globally. Crimes have huge costs on individuals who are victims, offenders’ family, and the entire society. It results in both monetary and psychological damages to the whole society. Unemployment is the key factor that makes unemployed individuals engage in criminal activity due to deterioration of their living standards. Crime rates are high in a situation when the society is experiencing economic crisis and people earn very low salaries or do not have a place to work, thus making such individuals to be socially unprotected and resorting to criminal activities. If individuals in the society who experience unemployment for a long-term period, they start being influenced by various consequences such as injustice, sense of being excluded, and lack of hope of getting a source of income that is legitimate. The rise in unemployment rates has varying effects on a specific social group by either decreasing or increasing criminal activity.
Poverty and Crime
Individuals who live in poverty in the society engage in crime for many varying reasons. One of the primary reason why people commit a crime in poverty-stricken areas is survival. Many individuals engage in crimes such as burglary as a way to have a monetary gain so that they can manage to have food for their families and manage to maintain all the household expenses. Individuals also engage in criminal activity since their norm allows them to take the law into their hands. Areas experiencing extreme poverty lack access to law enforcement authorities while other areas have access to local law enforcement. People see law enforcement in such areas of poverty not helpful and that the reason for high crime rates in these areas. Individuals commit crimes as a way to find means of achieving status in the society due to lack of opportunities to feed and support their families. Local enforcement authorities in areas with high poverty levels do not protect the people, thus making them take law into their own hands when a crime is committed. The responsiveness is very slow in such neighborhoods compared to areas in suburbs since every individual is seen as a criminal although the person may be a victim. Crime in areas with low socioeconomic status is viewed as a means of self-help.
Many individuals experiencing poverty in the lives are not comfortable living in poverty. Therefore, such people choose crime as the best option to help them achieve a higher socioeconomic status in the society.
